From an accounting perspective the trips owed are a liability, and they can’t afford to let them just pile up. It’s a weekly pass, and by giving you ten days to use it, that’s already three days grace in case something goes wrong.

That makes sense actually. But maybe they can make the expiry date a bit later for when there are emergencies and someone can't use their trips for a few days.
