Gautrain n00b

You can take a train directly from Sandton to OR Tambo without changing trains.

then why the announcements constantly telling people to change trains?

I heard it on the sandton train, and the hatfield train.

I thought thats becuse the airport train only goes from marlboro, and they don't want people looking for the airport train to miss it.

There are north south trains and east west trains. Airport is east west, from airport to Sandton via Marlboro and Rhodes field.
The Hatfield to park Station (north south) stops at Marlboro and Sandton. So you can change for the airport at either one.

I understand now, was sure it only went from marlboro to the airport,
thats why always the announcements telling people to change trains at marlboro were for.

It's quicker at Marlboro, you don't double back on yourself.

That's if you take the train going to Marlboro on the wrong platform. Both lines go to Marlboro, one diverts to Pretoria after Marlboro, the other one stays en route to OR Tambo.

Why have a separate to Rhodesfield ?
Surely an extra Rhodesfield station on the airport line would be easier ?

Is a separate route for billing purposes but I've never seen a train that only goes to Rhodesfield or only goes to the airport
It's the same line.

That is unknown. It would be easier for them to show only 2 trains in my opinion.

Ah you're right ... I do recall stopping at Rhodesfield

I reckon they show it like that as on the train you have those Airport cars - even though you stop the doors don't open at Rhodesfield.

yip, there are announcements constantly telling people to change trains at Marlboro

and if I remember correctly the their is a direct train to Sandton, but it stops at marlboro station and goes back to sandton.

unless that's now changed?

Nope. Sandton straight to JNB and back.

Do we have a thread to discuss Gautrain times and stuff like that on here?

What's to discuss? The schedule rarely changes and the times are published on their website.
I want to discuss more things like "how long does it take the bus to get from Sandton Station to the Montecasino stop on a weekday morning at 06:00-ish? :P

Slightly longer than a car would take.

Slightly longer than a car would take.
I love the scientific answer.

:P

But I'm seriously looking for some info on this - maybe people who's done the ride a few times? I'm considering starting the Hatfield-to-Sandton ride daily, but if the times are all screwy it's not going to work.

Because you can't go from Rhodesfield to the airport (as in that trip is not an option), which is what a station on the airport line would imply.

Hey? Why not?
Pretty sure you could, but you'd be insane as it's like R150 fare to basically cross the R21

You can't enter the rhodesfield station and catch a train to the airport. The terminal is designed in such a way that you'd have to climb over a barrier to do that and you would be in trouble for that. The gautrain guards don't take **** for a reason.

Also, you can't tag in for this trip at rhodesfield, and you wouldn't be able to tag out at the airport, so you would have more **** sammichs to eat before you catch your plane anyway.
