Gautrain speed shootout

The Gautrain is one of the most popular public transport services among middle-class citizens in Gauteng, with 62,000 train journeys a day.

People can travel to numerous stations between Johannesburg, Pretoria, and OR Tambo Airport along the Gautrain’s 80-kilometre commuter rail system.

Would be nice after the almost ten years it's been running that the line was extended further into other areas as promised, but it's been years since those plans were drawn up.

Rumor has it the proposed lines are taking long due to planning issues at the various councils. The land in question has to be re-zoned accordingly and it seems with all the municipal bylaws under SPLUMA, this is taking quite some time.

Oh I can imagine, there was supposed to be a school built in my area by the beginning of 2014, the land was cleared and only then it was held back by the EPA. Since 2014.

would be nice if it actually wasn't a white elephant costing Gauteng residents billions to keep it afloat.

There seems to be something wrong with my eyes, because apart from the headline screaming at me, I can't see in that article where the tax payer is paying anything let alone billions for this.
Yeah doesn't mention it in the article, but the government is apparently pushing money there.

I don't think your dictionary works.

No problem, what do you call a failed project that costs 1.2 billion a year in tax payers money to keep it running because at capacity it cant generate enough income to make a profit let alone break even?

I call it a tax payer subsidised project that has actual value. I'd rather have my tax money spent on that than on trips to Dubai and Nkandla.
Not to mention etoll gantries. Now that fits the definition of a white elephant -

noun

  1. a possession that is useless or troublesome, especially one that is expensive to maintain or difficult to dispose of.

lol, no problem, you call it a subsidised project I call it an economic failure. If tax payers weren't funding the 100 million a month it would collapse and be completely worthless.

Correct, Thank you, You have just described the Gautrain

noun

  1. a possession that is useless or troublesome, especially one that is expensive to maintain or difficult to dispose of.
Speaking of the second white elephant - the e-Tolls. part of the thinking behind the tolls was to try and force more people to use white elephant number one aka Gautrain, that spectacularly failed.

I would have expected at least free WiFi for the use of loyal commuters of this new transport to and from work. Nearly every township in this area will get free WiFi, but a paying client doesn't even get a consistent reception.

been wondering about this for years, why hasnt the route network been extended?

or allow the gautrain trains to travel on ordinary (prasa) tracks?
I mean at least then the route network might be larger.

I mean in France the TGV sometimes goes fast, and sometimes goes slow as a snail when its on old sections of tracks.
so why cant they do it here?
