Gautrain too successful?

This is great news! It means the Gautrain is a feasible alternate to an overweight nation killing the planet while being overtaxed with tolls and fuel.

i know some guys would love to see earlier trains
 
I've never taken or seen the Gautrain and I live in Jean Avenue :eek:

When I'm driving home in the evenings though I always see lots of cars at the Centurion station.

For me not so much earlier trains as later trains. Working late kills the system.
Even though it's not really designed for it, visiting people would also be a lot easier.
 
I sometimes take the train from My office in PTA central which is a block away from the station to hatfield in order to get a lift home. The amount of ppl that come from Jhb / centurion to go to hatfield station is amazing. train is always at least 3/4 full these days. Must say, I love zooming past the traffic! And I walk the 8 blocks to my lift's office on the other side. :)

If you are two people, and have to pay the exorbitant taxi fares to get to/from the Gautrain station, then it is actually cheaper to leave your car at the airport (in the LT parking).

Return trip for two to the airport via GT (for me) is about R105*4 + R90 + R130 = R640. Doesn't work !

sounds like a rippoff... pay and have to stand.... if the seats are generally all taken then they should clearly see the demand and either make the trains a bit longer or run more frequently.... pity its too late to get double decker cars, wont fit under the electric cabling & tunnels i guess

It is just sometimes that this happens, it is not the norm I think.

Happens in a lot of countries. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.
 
Not sure how true this is but apparently people car pooling on both ends i.e.
>Driver one drives everyone to the station in morning.
>Driver two leaves his car at the destination station and takes them to the office(s).
So everyone that would normally pay the bus fairs pays the guys carpooling them for door to door service.
Drivers rotate cars on interval and split fees...


I'm seeing a business opportunity here...

It is just a 8km walk from my house to one station, and I think I can do that quite easily. But I would rather just someone to drop me off at the station. I don't feel that comfortable to ask people to drop me off at the airport, because that is quite a drive. Oh, and I am on the Centurion ORT route.

The longest trip is Hatfield to Rosebank. Don't know the km's length but it takes 35 minutes. Most of the trips are way less time that that, some of my time is spent waiting for the train, or the bus and the most is sitting on the bus.
 
I'm glad people are using it, seeing as so many people in these forums touted it as a white elephant
 
i used the centurion to marlboro train yesterday morning. IT WAS SOOO FULLL.. seriously, i had to stand with all my luggage..

meh. I've been in trains in Germany & Netherlands that were so packed you couldn't turn around if you had a backpack on.

I won't mind standing then as you are bound to get a seat as people get off at the first stops. I use to stand a lot as a student on morning trains in CT but I'm older now so I would probably not like it as much.
