Gear for an airshow

Just take lots of pics, about 1 out of every 3 will look good.

Also depends on the window, if there's a bit of bird**** on it, or the sun is at a bad angle it can get messed up.
You get a few blurry pics when taking through a window as the camera lens can get a bit confused as to what distance it should focus on.

If u want to use zoom, then take about 6 pics of whatever it is you want a pic of.

What I'm trying to say is - TAKE A LOT OF PICS.

I normally use the burst method for low light

The problem in this case is the sheer size of the 150-500 and/or the 50-500 will make the vibrations much more pronounced than I'm used to.

Don't use burst mode on my "cheap" camera, just have everything set to "Auto" and it works fine. Instead of using zoom, I just fly closer.

from what I gather the guy wants aerial photos of his other planes so flying closer is up to him Apparently they reverse the rear seat in one of his planes for the photographer and remove the window.

Airshow pics are pretty difficult to take with most cameras.

The pilots were pretty accommodating this weekend.

OS . . . does anyone know if the OS in the 150-500 will effectively compensate for vibrations from flying in a plane?

I find that for evenly moving subjects (like a flying plane), panning automatically reduces camera shake. I get good similar results with and without IS.

I think it's a moot point either ways, you need a fast enough shutter time to stop the motion, so shake isn't likely to be a problem - although at 500mm on crop body, anything is possible...

I doubt there will be much need for panning under these circumstances.

I'm going to be in a plane taking pictures of another plane so most of the shots are going to be pretty well set up before I take the shot.

Aah right, now I understand what you meant by the vibrations of the plane. IS/OS should work the same.

Yeah, don't take the filter personally.

Sounds like you're going to have a great time in the plane, the other aircraft will probably be less than 100 feet away, so u won't need a massive lens.
3 x zoom will be good enough.
You can always crop the pics a bit later.

Shaking shouldn't be much of a factor.
Have your spare battery handy (and DO NOT drop the battery or your camera).

Also keep your belt on, the one that keeps your butt on the seat.
The one that goes over your chest is only for takeoff and landing, so u can take that off while you're flying.

Just take LOTS of pics.
