Gears 1 vs 2 GFX comparison !

Can't see much difference in this pic, just looks like mos grew over the environment.

When Epic Games' Xbox 360 exclusive Gears of War was unveiled for Xbox it blew us away. This was the next-gen game that we'd been waiting for and the first to really show off how powerful the Xbox 360 was.

Approaching two years on from the game's winter 2006 release, Gears is still able to hold its own with the best graphical showcases on either the Xbox 360 or PS3, but we're now preparing for the next leap is visual fidelity with the impending release of Gears of War 2.

We've all seen the early look at a stage from the campaign, but now MS has released a bunch of screen shots which directly compare Gears with Gears 2 using the popular multiplayer map, Gridlock

Sure the lighting is hugely different, but look harder and you'll see heaps more detail and effects that make Gears 2 look almost a generation better than its predecessor. We don't need to tell you that though; decide for yourselves by pouring your eyes over the five comparison shots we've presented for you over the next few pages.

Thats the Keyword in the whole story right there.

I could immediately see the difference. The lighting (in that map specifically) is much warmer than the cold feeling of GOW1

No update in graphics...just different textures.

not bad though..

will they say that the polygon count on the lanser went from 1500 to 3500,
so they are pusshing a lot more detail into the actors etc.

to be honest i think gears one does look better in those pics, but after you watch a few vids of the game in action you can truly see the diffrence, its gonna be awesome expecially the fact that there are bots(supposedly designed by highly rated unreal bot developers)and the new capture the flag mode, what can be better than a flag that u have to take hostage and it tries to blow you apart with a shotgun (I'm quite the CTF fan)

There seems to be a whole lot more detail on the character...
Take a look at the arm and the back...

But the map looks the same just with different textures and lighting.

Clearly both scenes are taken from different times of day (hence the warmer tone of the bottom pics as a low afternoon sun can clearly be seen)

What a strange comparison for Epic to make. That said, one can definitely see the amount of detail added just in terms of texture, shadow, lighting and model quality.

Also bear in mind that static pics do not show other improvements such as soft body physics, terrain destructibility, etc :)

gears1 looks too clean. the gears2 shots are much better, except for the fog, you can clearly see the view disatnce was decreased :(
[edit] on second look, it could even be a blurring effect to hide the low res of distand objects.

The key differences are off your focal centre ;)

Gears 1 invested most of it's processing the the character models because there's one right under your nose the whole time. The environments by comparison look a bit flat and Low res.

In Gears 2 they've pumped up the detail in the environments to be more on par with the character models, as well as lighting and performance improvements which allow more action on screen at any one time which won't manifest itself in a screenshot.

and the new capture the flag mode, what can be better than a flag that u have to take hostage and it tries to blow you apart with a shotgun (I'm quite the CTF fan)
Now that right there is one awesome idea.
