GeForce 8600GT on 300W PSU

Hi guys,

I ordered an Asus NVidia GeForce 8600GT yesterday and I'm still waiting for it to be delivered. I currently have a 300W power supply unit. Will I be able to use the card with my current PSU? I really don't have the money to buy another power supply and it's too late to back out of the order for the card now. :p

Any advice is appreciated.

300w is enough to power a 8600gt but if you're still worried you could always look at buying a PSU second hand for under R300.
 
I sure hope so. 50W can be the difference between life an death though. :( Is there any way that one can monitor power consumption through a third party program or built in windows function?
 
What other devices do you have in your computer? It all depends on that, as 300W is very low, so I would calculate it first, before risking harming your hardware.

Anwyway, the other specs are as follow:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Dual Core Processor
2x 1GB DDR2 667 RAM
160GB SATA HDD
Ethernet card

That's about it. ;)

You'll probably get away with a 300W PSU for your current setup. Just be aware that adding more drives or overclocking is probably out of the question :D

Including the graphics card? What is the worst case scenario if my PSU can't produce enough power for my hardware?

Also, will I need to buy a new chassis as well?

worst case scenario is if your psu is not feeding your vga card the right voltages
your gpu card could be damaged eg: like faulty video memory etc
 
it should work although i wouldnt try. What type of PSU is it?
My reccomendation: Buy a 400w Aopen.
cheap.
 
Make sure your running your screen of its own cable, not of of those dodgy things that also draws power from your PSU.

Either way, its going to be tight, but should work.
 
So I went out and bought myself a 400W PSU, just to be safe. The card seems to be working fine. My PC is a lot more noisy now than before. Could this be the PSU or the graphics card?
 
Both. The fan on the PSU could be louder, and likewise the fan on the graphics card could also be louder.
 
normally fans on low end card are not noise

open the box put your finger on the fan's card slow it down and you will know
 
Eish dude. I think you're cutting it fine running a 300W with that graphics card. The only thing you can do is try it out. You'll just have to see by trial-and-error.
