The price difference between a 4870 and 4890 means anyone buying the 4870 is being silly and should put in the extra cash for the 4890 which is not very much more.
HD 4870 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI-I / TVO Toxic R 2,050 excl. R 2,337 incl.
HD 4890 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E DVI-I / TVO R 2,399 excl. R 2,734 incl.
Extra 300 odd bucks seems worth it to me.
So let's wrap things up here. Overall I do not find the release of the Radeon HD 4890 to be tremendously jawbreaking over the Radeon HD 4870 1024MB, but it does offer a much welcomed performance increase. Once you start to tweak a little you'll be surprised by the sheer amount of headroom though.
The card at reference clocks viciously takes the 219 USD ~ 190 EUR GeForce GTX 260 as prisoner, even the SP216 model is no match whatsoever. All thanks to the faster clocks the 4890 offers, yet also to a tremendous heap of performance increases to be found in the latest Catalyst drivers.

In some tests the HD4890 outperforms the GTX285.
dunno about the xfx version, but it beats the MSI N280GTX OC HydroGen (GTX 280 1024 MB) on 3dmark06 (first bench I opened)

Ok, so on Crysis (Which is highly optimized for nVidia if I may add) it's 0.6 fps slower than a GTX285.
now whats the price of a 4890 and whats the price of a GTX285 ?

I can see your point.... i looked over the full review, its gonna come down to a lot of personal preference. Definately a nice card the 4890, whips my 280 in a span of games ! Unlucky me, got my 280 bout 3 months before the new HD's from ATi, but I'm still happy with it.
But hell a 4890 for R1K less than a 285... yip ... ATI wins.

We are not saying anything about the 280, our point is buying the 260 over the 4890 is retarded. I don't care if people are amd fans or nvidia fans, you should buy what is the best not what your heart tells you. In fact i think people who buy products purely based on a companies name are idiotic anyways thats my fanboy rant for the day.
The fact is the 4890 is half the price of 280 and just about keeps up with it, it will mow down the 260 and its only slightly more expensive.

@killadoob U are right, I dont care if I use ATI or nVidia. In fact all my cards prior to the 8800GT and then the GTX280 were ATI's. But at the time of purchase they were king, Since ATI and AMD have merged, their cards just get better and cheaper! And its an absolut no brainer for the 4890, hell, I would have been able to buy two at the price my GTX280 cost last year! Always 1 step forward two back! @keeper knows the feeling!

Yup ati have made a come back of note if you ask me, imagine 2 4890's wow would whip even a 295 i reckon.
