I look forward to plenty comments celebrating the fact that SA is fairly high in the rankings...

I do wonder how much of this has to do with women themselves. I am always baffled at how many seem to lack ambition and are quite happy to, quite early in life, talk about how they are going to find a rich husband to look after them.

Im pretty sure that if you and and two male colleagues started working for the same employer 30 years ago, and all of you were on the same level. Now 30 years later you are still doing the same work with no promotions and your two male colleagues has had numerous promotions over the past 30 years, would you quite or would you think - ok maybe in the next 15-20 years I'm sure to get an promotion?

This is an actual example of someone that I work with. This person is perfectly capable to do both her male colleagues work, yet she has never been given the chance to show what she can do.

Woman will always be thought as the lesser and not capable to do the same job as a man, but when I look at the people I work with it's always the woman that's punctual always on time for work and who does their work to the best of their capabilities. On the other hand the men are always late for work, or simply just don't show up for work and are slackers when it comes to performing their duties.

We could all quote examples that favour both sides of the argument. I did so above. I have experienced the comments of many women accepting that their husband is the bread winner. You take it even further back than this and, based on my personal perception and not a scientific study, you look at the subjects taken at school. Lots of girls were taking home economics (not sure if that still exists) and the like while the guys were doing accounting and maths.

The fact that a women takes time off work to have a baby probably also influences things. If we regard those two individuals to whom you refer. If the women is in her 20's and gets married (or even if she doesn't) the employer will (unfairly, yes) think to themselves that it is likely that she will be looking to take maternity leave some time soon so let's promote the male.

Another first hand work place trait of women that I have experienced is getting emotional. I have seen a number of females in an office place burst into tears when the going gets tough or they get scolded. This is rarely the response of a male employee. This could also affect promotion decisions especially when most are still being made by a traditionally male dominated management level.

All of this is generalising but then that is all we can really do without a proper study.

Wow, those worst countries sure are very religious countries.

I believe men and women are equal but have different talents and roles and cant be measured using exactly the same criteria. Feminist have messed more up than created value and gone against nature. When you take away a family structure you starting to mess with things that many unintended consequences.Sure a women could do anything and good luck to them but the base of the economy is still run on male engineering. To me it just a whole lots of propaganda either you compete on equal terms or if you not for whatever reason, you still compete and add value and if you feel discriminated against just start your own thing, but dont force the issue. You cant have it all ways.Sure you get bad men leaders but the two worst ceo's on the JSE are women in Cynthia Carrol and Maria Ramos,so the only argument is best person for the job and understand men and women are different

Why are the majority of the countries at the bottom... Muslim countries? Why are there no Muslim countries in the top group?

Abrahamic specifically.

Not surprising considering Abrahamic tradition is for rigidly defined gender roles placing the husband firmly above the woman in a position of authority with women treated as being just a hair's breadth away from property.

I am pleased to see how high up SA is. Go South Africa go!!

You have some valid facts there but I will give you just two examples of many of the men in my workplace.

Male employee number one finds out that he suddenly has to do some real work for a change, less than an hour later he goes to his superior and tells them that he feels sick and is going to see a doctor. Gets booked of work for a week.

Male employee number two hurts one of his fingers (not the hand he writes with) Does not come to work because of this.

The point I'm trying to make is that males (not all of them) know that they can practically get away with murder in the work place, and therefore takes advantage of it.

Woman works their buts off and don't even get recognition for their work.

I'll take myself as an example, I have 17 years service with my current employer. I got a "promotion" after approximately 13 years service. In my current work environment there is definite favoritism towards my male colleagues. They get all the latest new and best equipment (furniture, pc's exc.) while I have to make do with old recycled furniture and long overdue outdated equipment.

If you dare to ask for something you are always told that there's no money, yet somehow they manage to get money somewhere to indulge themselves in the latest technology.

I totally agree. Also whats interesting is all those top states have good inclusive democracies, high levels of social spending. Interesting the Philippines made that list because they are a very Catholic nation. Very very Catholic. When I visit I keep my religious opinions to myself and am thankful that I was brought up a Catholic, so I understand their traditions enough to go with their flow. They have had a female President. I think she is now in prison or having a trial for some of her corruption that was exposed.

Let's face it, the workplace is a very clicky environment. If you lick enough poopall you get the rewards. Maybe you should start licking? :p

...and South Africa loses another ranking

When it comes to representation in Parliament, women have it good in SA. The ANC is good at this, lets be honest.

But I definitely would not like to be a woman living in a township, and the majority of women in this country fall into that category.

I think women( at the lower income range) in Japan have it better than women in SA.

Just based on your interactions here, I would say you come across as quite intense and with quite a chip on your shoulder. You are allowing yourself to use the victim mentality. They get the new stuff I get the old stuff, they get away with taking leave whenever they want while I slave away doing their work for them.
Oh yes and my favourite word... always. Always late, always lazy, always incompetent.

Do you hear yourself? Do you hear a person that is pleasant to be around? Maybe if you stopped being a victim and just started being a human being towards the other human beings you would find you actually get along better.

We are creatures built on socialising, you shouldn't be surprised when you set yourself up as the outcast that you miraculously are...
Take some personal responsibility for your attitude and perhaps you can turn it around for yourself.

Men's work is valued by society more than women's, but, women's lives are valued more than men.

When a women dies, it is a tragedy. When a man dies, it is a statistic.
