Spoke to the samsung guys today at The homermakers expo and according to him in a *hush hush* tone he said that "I will kick myself later if I buy now" because the new models will be releasing soon and are worth waiting for. I was ogling the 50" C550 Sammy but I suppose I can wait and see what the new models offer. If they suck then the old models will be a bit cheaper because they will be clearing stock and if they are indeed awesome then I will be happy that I waited :)

Apparently they are going to be an inch or so bigger. I am under correction, but I think that they are going to start 3D at 42", oh, also a very good chance they are going to be an extra 7% more - don't forget the proposed new import tax/levy.

That applies to PC monitors....not TV's afaik.
 
I was at someones house today for a braai and they have a LG 42" plasma which is hooked up to a normal old SD DSTV decoder and the quality was superb, way better than on my Samsung 50" :(

Is it my RCA's that are killing my picture? They are running from my decoder in another room to my TV, I would say about 10 meters away.

This is the only thing that I can think is giving me a crap picture.

So they have HDMI?

Yip, it's your RCAs. Get an HD PVR already!
 
I would never connect anything via RCA, in fact even with my old(ish) Series 4 Samsung plasma, I have a few devices that I connect via HDMI and I bought 3 port HDMI switcher from Amazon which works great.

Nah connected via normal TV cable, its an old decoder, doubt it even has HDMI.

Thats why I was so amazed at the quality.

Yeah and to make matters worse, I have 3 separate RCA cables, using extenders to get to the TV.

The HD PVR does look amazing though :)
 
Ok so HD Pvr it is!

Anyone know where I can get one for a decent price? Was going to go to Makro, but I see they are R1999 :eek:
 
If anyone knows about some good 26" LCD / Plasma TV deals please let me know. I saw the Sony BRAVIA™ 26" LCD TV - BX300 Series for R2909-00. Is that a good price? I also saw some much cheaper ones at HiFi corporation - a 32" by D:Sign for R2599. Is that a good make?

Btw, Grimspoon - the decoder you looking for HD PVR is R1699 at Hifi Corporation!

Plasmas start at 42". What are you wanting the TV for? What's your budget?

R1,699 - amazing price. Now take that to Game. :D
 
Hey PP :) Ah ok, I wasnt really sure what the difference was between LCD / Plasma (blush) but yes, Its only for watching DSTV on really. I am looking to replace the box 54cm tv in my bedroom - its anchient lol! My budget - well, I dont want to spend more than R3000.

Can't go wrong if your budget is limited to R4,500. Best bang for buck system on the market (trust me, I have a good ear for audio) - if you can still find them. Might need to ask Game to courier one from their Jeffrey's Bay store.

Alright. Well plasma is superior for normal TV (called SD TV - standard definition) and sport. If you can fit a 42" plasma and increase your budget to about R4,800, you could get one and you will be much happier than you would be with an LCD at that price point.

If you really can't go more than R3,000 then your best bet would be a LG/Samsung/Sony 26". Stay far away from D:Sign and stick to the reputable brands. Also remember that 26" is very small, but yeah, a budget is a budget.

You could maybe also look for a branded 32" LCD, second-hand. Example Samsung 5 Series, Sony EX400 series. Check Gumtree, JunkMail, etc. Let us know.
