That's true but not even the high end ones. Cheaper ones are surprisingly good. I was told the same thing at the Samsung shop at Canal Walk (not that their feedback holds much weight). I read quite a lot of reviews which confirmed that as well. I was going to get the c550 will wait.

The review at the link below sold me. The dude reckons picture quality is on par with LG's 2010 flagship plasma, the px950 and far behind panny's 2010 #1 the vt25.

Hi All, have a question for those with some experience with the following ... what would provide the better DSTV SD channel viewing experience, incl occasion sport (motion) ...

- SD PVR to branded 42' Plasma e.g. Samsung C430

- HD PVR to non-branded 40' LCD/LED (100+ Hz) e.g. HiSense 40T28

The HDPVR + LCD combo is about R1700 more, for which you get the HD channels. But if you're mostly watching the other SD channels, is the extra money worth it (also 2' less)?

Put another way, which is superior, the upscaling/stretching on branded Plasma or the HD PVR?

Plasma is best for SD. Plasma is best at the entry level. SD over HDMI (HD PVR) is especially good.

HD PVR's HD channels are 720p, same as the plasma.

I'd bet that the plasma will be better than the LCD at most tasks except connecting to PC.

I've been following this thread for a while and have learnt a lot about plasma and changed my opinion of them greatly.

I currently have a 32" HD-Ready Samsung LCD screen that I'm looking to replace.
I watch the following things:
  • Blu-ray Movies from Blu-ray player
  • 720p TV series and lower from a Intel Atom powered Home Server (cannot output > 1280x720)
  • Standard TV (antenna) - very rarely
  • No Sport (except for important events - SWC, CWC)

I am also looking at getting an XBOX 360 in the near future.

So, other than Blu-ray's which already look fantastic on my 32" HD-ready screen, everything is <= 720p.

I wouldn't want to spend more than 6k or 7k.
What would you recommend I purchase? Plasma or LCD and what model of those would be good?

50" plasma. Reason: All <720p, SD TV, bit of sport, gaming - all of which suits plasma.

You can get the Samsung PS50C430 for R6,999 or less (test in store before taking it as there have been a few duds, although I am not surprised seeing as how popular it is :p). But bear in mind Samsung's latest range should hit the stores soon - offer better features and aren't too much more expensive than the current ones. LG's are also good, but Samsung's have been rated better, and are more popular.

Aha, I'm going to have to correct you there. Some of their HD channels are broadcast in 1080P. That what one of the managers at Multichoice in N1 City told me the other day.

That is not true Juggy. 1080i sometimes, but never 1080p...

Wow, 50" O.o for that price.
Any time frame on the new range?
Are Blu-rays any good on a Plasma? They looked great on a 32" @ 720p, but that resolution on 50"?
 
1080p 720p > 1080i

The question is, would you rather get a smaller, worse at sport and SD LCD for 1080i? I think not.

They're on the Samsung shop site, haven't seen them at Game/Makro yet where they will be cheaper.

Everything is good on plasma, except working on a PC where too much static images will cause burn in. So yes, Blu-rays and any HD media is excellent on plasma. Definitely superior to entry level LCDs at the same price point.

In fact a forumite did a comparison in store of a 1080p movie rip on a 1080p LCD and 720p plasma. Both entry level. I'll let you guess which blew which out the water. ;)

You can't spin it like that. There is a huge difference between 1080p and 1080i. The latter is comparable to 720p in quality and bandwidth used and for fast moving images broadcasters actually prefer 720p.
 
Went to Digital Experience today, they have the new Samsung D-series plasmas at the following prices:
51D490 = R8995
51D450 = R7495
43D450 = R5395

Aren't they normally quite a pricey store....? (Prices look pretty good for new range TVs)
