My plasma PS50C430 finally kakked after about 9 months use. It started displaying the red dots after exiting the DSTV menus or any bright content so I logged a call with Samsung to repair it.

Landed up with Liptronics who informed me that there were no parts available so I figured I'd have to wait. Not so, Liptronics organised that the set be credited with Game and another be issued. As the set is no longer current stock and prices have come down since I bought it all I have to do was add R750 and I got the PS51D490. I'm a very happy with the outcome as I was quite bleak I purchased the PS50C430 just before the new sets were released.

The image is FAR superior on the new set. It's much crisper and detailed and there is definitely more depth.

Thumbs up to Game and Samsung, you'll get more business from me in the future that is for sure

I haven't read any reports of Bxxx playing media, but perhaps a firmware update would do it...

i have seen that if you go into the set up you can change it

how safe is this

SAMSUNG B550 – How to enable MKV & DIVX/XVID playback
http://www.avforums.com/forums/lcd-l…-playback.html

Ok so I finally have MKV’s and Divx’s working on my LE40B550, flawlessly I might add – here’s how:

1 – Enter the Service Menu (when in standby press press info, menu, mute then standby)

2 – Enter ‘Control’ option

3 – Enter ‘Sub Option’

4 – Turn on WISELINK MOVIE, WISELINK WRITE & HIGH DEVI

5 – Press Standby

Sorted! thanks to reddish75 for finding the wiselink option (this allowed divx’s but not MKV’s), all I did was enable ‘high devi’ and ‘wiselink’ write

So why would they include this in the hardware and not enable it hmmm that’s odd (it’s clearly not struggling to play the MKV’s at all 1280 x 720)

Firmware I’m using is latest (check samsung site, ends 1008)

What a nice surprise people should know about this!!

ADDITION:

An almost concrete way of making sure your file plays first time:

have an AVI file of between 3-4 mb size and no longer than 1m30 seconds duration, start playback then stop it (using the return button on remote)

now play the file you intended to play, it will work without restarting the TV (MKV’s tested 720/1080p and many other file types including .ts files)

just saves your TV from rebooting which was happening about 20% of the time on execution of your file, 100% non restart (success) strike rate

I bought the Samsung ps51d550 on Sunday and I'm loving it! Picture quality is amazing and the blacks are just out of this world. First movie I watched was Avatar in full hd, what a treat! it was the first time I watched it since it was in cinema and it was a much better experience. The colour reproduction is fantastic and so natural on this tv.

Two issues:
- there is a faint buzz that is only audible when the volume is below 10. It gets a little louder in brighter scenes. Is that normal?

- when I stream full hd or 720p content from my pc using serviio, its a little jittery. Playing from usb seems fine. My network usage doesn't go above 4MB/s when streaming 1080p .mkv files, so I don't think its the network. Any ideas on how to solve this?

Other than the above, I'm extremely happy with the set.

I have to give a big thanks to everyone that contributed to this and other tv threads regarding this tv, it was a great help in making the decision to buy this set.

my plasma has a faint buzzing sound behind the tv but i cannot hear it from viewing distance even if the sound is off

Yeah all plasma's buzz, some more than others. Normal operation. It really shouldn't be audible from viewing distance.

You streaming over Gigabit LAN or Wireless N? Because Wireless N tends to have problems streaming 1080p AFAIK.

What's your viewing distance? I read in some other forums that the noise is directional. That seems to be true, the buzz is gone when I sit in the middle below centre.

Will check mine for buzzing later. My dstv decoder buzzes so loud that I'm not able to hear any other buzzing though. Once thing I noticed last night was that in the bottom right corner of my screen there is a triangle of dim pixels.

My viewing distance is the same. I'm going to game to check if the display model has the same amount of buzz.

I'm on a Cat5e cable to my 100mbs LAN, the PC shows that it's streaming @ 4MB/s for 1080p content. The thing is, the same happens with 720p stuff but to a lesser degree. It's not a major problem as I wil be using my media pc and amp in a few weeks (as soon as I get a graphics card for the media). I think for now I will just use my USB stick, it's not as convenient but does the job.

On another note, do you guys know if this TV does DTS HD decoding and if that passes through the digital / optical output for use with an AMP?

The buzzing is normal - I could hear my 51D550 easily from 3m away. It wasn't too distracting during movies... but noticeable during quiet scenes or between dialog. It was bothersome when using the screen as a monitor though (i.e. web browsing, etc).

would you guys condsider the 51d550 an upgrade to the ua32b6000? Im thinking about a change.

In terms of size, yes. :p

It's Series 5 compared to the LED-LCD which is Series 6... Which has a better engine.

But plasmas 1 series lower often compete with LCD/LED-LCDs 1 series up... So best you go and decide for yourself with your own media and settings...

The D550 Plasma has a better engine than the UA32B6000. That's a 2 year old B series model. The D550 does FHD 3D video processing so thats a no brainer. It actually has the same video processing engine as the D7000.

You sure about that?

Letters refer to time of manufacture/model range. Numbers indicate Series/superiority.

B6000 LED-LCD is still common and sold to this day.

Please link me to the D550 plasma having a better engine than 6 Series LED-LCD? News to me, would obviously be a huge factor that 5 Series plasma is about half the price per inch and better than 6 Series LED-LCD.

Please link to me the 5 Series plasma being better than a 6 Series LED-LCD ;). And don't come to me with 87 trillion forumites say so.
