My main dvd player is PS3 which is superb upscaler, but I also have a R599 Philips DVD player from 2 years ago, and it does a very good job of upscaling to 1080p. If you look closely not as good as the PS3, but very decent with no pixelation or any other serious picture distortion.

Strange that a BD capable player (newer/more powerful DSP scaler) would create such a bad/corrupt picture? Have you tried setting the LG to different output formats e.g. 1080i, 720p, 576p etc. to see if the TV's DSP can do a better upscaling/de-interlacing job (shouldnt).

Also an upscaled dvd picture will never match a true 1080p source, maybe you need to tune your TV's settings a bit to de-emphasise the imperfection e.g. brightness, contrast, sharpness, gamma, HDMI black levels, digital/mpeg flitering, colour space, film mode etc.

Will fiddle with it tonight

What's the largest CRT that you can get? Watching SD soccer on my folks 28" CRT and it's infinitely better than on my 51" FHD plasma.

You used to be able to get 84cm CRT tvs, a holiday home I went to in Scotland had one, a massive CRT.

Hi,

I currently have a Samsung Series 6 40" LED 2009 and I am very happy with it apart from the size, I have seen a Samsung PS51D550 @ R10199 which seems brilliant but 1 thing is troubling me, from what I have read here and on various reviews and that is the potential glare in a room that is not totally dark compared to my existing set.

I have a room with wooden blinds so can get the room dark besides the light through the slats but would this mean for the reflection not to bother me compared to my LED that I would have to close the blinds each time.

Got the blinds open now, no direct sunlight and cannot see any reflection on the LED.....

Would love to get the Plasma but this worries me.....

Anyone with some experience on this would be welcome to give me their thoughts.

Thanks
Russ

Unfortunately this is the compromise with mid-range FHD plasmas.

To get the best of both worlds requires some higher investment, with the best out there being the high-end Panasonic Viera NeoPlasma models which have the Infinite Black Anti-reflective Louvre Filter.

The 2011 xT30 range is not offically avaliable from Panasonic SA yet (some say Oct), but to get an idea, the P50ST30 (cheapest 50" NeoPlasma) is about R22,700 imported from Amazon (via wantitall.co.za).

BTW while on wantitall saw this ... http://www.wantitall.co.za/Electron...rotector-for-LCD-LED-or-Plasma-TV__B004W0Y884 ... maybe some PS51D550 owner irritated with reflections may want to take a 2 grand gamble

Thanks for the replies....

So if I stick with Samsung LED and want bigger than 40" I have to look @ 46" (Series 5 R12k) or go to the 55" which is crazy mad expensive, did find a Samsung UA55D6400 which is not listed on Samsung.co.za but it is listed on one of their local micro sites and I can prob buy it online for around R28k, doing some searches it looks like the AUS region has it but very limited info on forums.

Anyone heard of it?

If anyone has a suggestion of a 50" size R20k - R30k LED / Plasma (with non reflection tech) please let me know

Thanks a lot

And Series 5 LED-LCD will be a downgrade.

Many LCD fanbois make reflection out to be more than it actually is. Why not get the PS51D550 and try it in your house? If it's not good then take it back. You are allowed to within 7 days.

You can try looking for a PS50C7000 - has the AR coating.

IIRC Dion Wired also have the PS59D550 on special for R19,995.

Thanks for that advice, called them and they agreed that they would take it back if I was unhappy with the reflection issue, I was very surprised.

They said the PS50C7000 has been discontinued so waiting on a price on the PS50D7000

You mean PS51D7000. Unfortunately the only 51" available in SA is the D550. The D6900, D7000 and D8000 aren't being imported by Samsung SA. The D6900 has anti reflective filter and doesn't cost too much more than the D550 overseas.

Well, I was a Plamsa fanboi, and I took mine back :D

But I agree... testing a TV in your own home is the only real way to choose a TV.

Prob solved, changed tv settings and bd pic settings, big difference
Apart from that issue, excellent player
Thanks Roman

I'm a plasma fan and my next TV will be a plasma as well, but i'm selling mine 3 months old PS51D550 mirror. To all the interested buyers, send me a PM and we will come to a deal. Comes with a 4 year warranty from Hirsh and pair 3D glasses and 4 Shrek 3D Blu Ray movies. I really want to get rid of this crap.

Did we not tell you that it was reflective?

You also had 7 days to return it (just saying).
