Thanks PostmanPat, been very keen on the PS51D550, but might just be a little out my my price range (also only seen it for R11 500)

Been searching for a while, but where is the best place to actually buy? (Cape Town)

Edit: [ Do want Full HD ]

Usually Game because they beat any cheaper price by 10% of the difference in price. ;)

I understand why people want FHD, helps to understand why you want it?

Hi Guys,
Thank you for all your comments and info, muchos gracias!
So I ended up doing the unthinkable ... I purchased a Samsung 46" LED 3D Smart Series 6 ... for around R12,500 ...
I need opinions please ... was it a good buy or not?
Originally I set my mind on the Samsung 51" Full HD Plasma D550 for R10,000 @ Game atm ... seemed to be the best "all rounder" ... but then I saw this 6 Series LED and was seriously impressed by the picture especially the black also the extra smart features, that I probably won't use right now, lol ... maybe it was the damn sales people that supped up the picture settings to impress idiots like me but i have to admit I was sold when I saw it ... so there you have it ... I am a happy customer but I would like some other people's opinion on this product ... do you think it was a better choice than the 51D550 Plasma or not?

Well most LED-LCDs sell because they appear brightest and therefore best under bright shop lights, so there is a reason they appear best in those viewing conditions. This means there is no place worse you can test. And yes, salesmen have most/all TVs in stores on "torch mode" - 100% brightness and contrast which improves the look in mass mart stores (and makes CCFL-LCD/plasma look worse). In your home though, it's a totally different story.

You have an excellent TV with a 100Hz (or more?) engine. If you are happy then that's great. But if you succumbed to the salesmen and bright shop lighting/LED-LCD conundrum then you may want to retest.

Personally I would have taken the plasma because it's quite a bit bigger and R2,500 cheaper. And it suits my room because it doesn't get much direct/very bright sunlight. So it would be a more sensible and learned decision for me.

Thanks for your opinion and kind words, super grandmaster PostmanPot, I do value & appreciate it :)

I am very happy with this purchase yes ... I guess I wanted to see if I made a bad choice or not, from someone else's perspective.
And it's always good to get a second opinion and learn from others who know the tricks of trade :)

The model I have purchased now has a 200 Hz engine, which is respectable, i think, but still a far cry from the 600Hz of the plasma screens. My plan was to purchase one screen now and another one later ... this one that would be able to play newish stuff (Full HD movies, 3D & internet content) as well as play normal TV movies and soapies ... see this Screen I would like to pass on to my folks in a couple of months time (my parents won't be watching much HD, i don't think) , after which I would like to purchase the 74" D8000 for myself ... so at the store I figured maybe best go for a slightly smaller screen to handle the my mom's Soapies ... Also our living room is very lit up so maybe LED would be better suited for them?! Everything has been working very nicely but I am yet to attach DSTV to this new screen of mine ... will let you know how it goes :)
Cheers!

600Hz is actually marketing gimmick. 4 and 5 Series plasmas have 50/60Hz engines just like entry LCD/LED-LCD. They are divided into 10 fields which each refresh at 50/60Hz, so they do 60 * 10 = 600Hz... In fact some of the worst marketing gimmick there is. :D

So while entry plasma is mostly better than entry LCD at motion handling, entry plasma would never compare to your 200Hz engine. I think D8000 uses 200Hz+ engine so that will truly be an awesome buy for size and value! Wonder if they Market it at 2000Hz? :D

Enjoy!

Thanks guys.

Just before I buy it, saw this special at Makro.
Samsung UA40D5000 for R5799.

Seems a good deal for now? And then later in life by something a bit better and bigger.

That certainly isn't one of the better "all purpose" TVs.

If dead set on LCD/LED-LCD (and not succumbing to marketing gimmick of LED-LCD), I would rather get the LA40D550 - cheaper and better picture quality (entry LCD generally has better PQ than entry LED-LCD). LAxxD550 are very well rated.

Tell us what you want your TV for.

Thanks for the reply.

I play a little Xbox, mostly watch TV (some HD, some SD). A bit of sport here and there, but am mostly streaming that for now.

Hmm.

I have an UA40D5003BR and its an awesome TV. Remember that getting a bigger TV souds like a good idea but viewing distance, lighting etc plays a significant role.

EDIT: Just to add I do a fair amount of xbox gaming and the quality is superb.

PS51D450 51" HD Ready plasma would give you a far better experience for all tasks (SD/HD/gaming) due to its size and superior picture quality over 5 Series LCD/LED backlit LCD. Unless your room is bright or sit closer than 2m, has windows/doors in path of TV, etc., I would not recommend anything else.

Hi all,

I need to finally buy an HD tv.
I need a 46" LED for under R10000.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I am tempted to go for either a Samsung or Sony, but know very little to be honest.
EDIT: Oh yeah.. any opinions on the "cheaper" brands - e.g. HiSense?

Any help is appreciated :)

Thanks
Rax

Why LED backlit LCD? Why not CCFL backlit LCD or plasma? How did you get to knowing you need LED backlit LCD? Can't recommend if you don't tell us what it's going to be used for. Also need to know viewing distance and lighting conditions.

Went to aVa expo... definitely not worth R60... 1 floor with nothing you won't find at makro or dio n wired

Quick question:

What would the Sony kdl32cx520 be like as a PC monitor?

What should one look out for?
