Generator Boxes?

Ja, very! - When I learnt that you could actually get gas ones I googled all over to find. Eventually got a good deal on one from an oke on gumtree. Much easier (i imagine) than lugging jerry cans all over and pouring, cleaning etc.
 
Woohooo! Johan is coming to install sometime next week so I'll post pics soon. In the meantime I've bought and painted some galvanised guttering to act as a chimney for fumes. (estate rules say I have to take the exhaust to roof height. Fair enough as gennies really make a lot of fumes). That's going up tomorrow ready for Johan wall mounted exhaust silencer.

I'm wondering if I'll need to put a small 12v fan at the end of my diy gutter chimney to help with extraction?

Guess I'll find out soon enough.

Can't wait to hear see smell the difference. Even a 50% overall noise reduction will be well worth it.

I've stared biulding my own one this weekend. I've seen different designs. My generator frame stands on rubber feet and the motor itself has rubbers between the mountings. I am putting the enclosure on castor wheels. I am not doing a fan, but has two 60cm x 73cm weather proof louvres on the intake and exhaust side - this should be sufficient. I am allowing for a door on the front (for oil inspection and refill) and one on top (for fuel refills). I've not though about how to allow the electrical cable in yet - but a simply rubber gland will work fine.

Its not going to be the prettiest thing in the world but it will work fine and its fun doing it myself. I will post a pic when I am done.

Yip. Installed and mostly chuffed. The exhaust silencer works very well for the sound carrying. (Does not do much for you standing right next to it though.) - I added a galvanised gutter (painted it to match the house) to pipe the fumes up to roof level. This works really well and there is no fumes whatsoever even after running the genny for 4 hours of load shedding. The box is also fairly good for the price. Not as weather resistant as I would have liked but I guess that's why Johan supplies a decent rain cover for the box. (Unfortunately I did not put the cover on and we had some rain the other day. - Now the cover stays on!) - The cooling fan seems to work very well also as the inside of the box didn't even seem warm after running the genny for 4 hours.

I was hoping for a bit more sound dampening though with the box but there is definitely a noticeable difference in sound level. That being said... I'm thinking of adding some extra sound insulation to the box. Maybe 1 or 2 layers of foam/rubber play mats (or yoga/gym mat) with a layer of masonite to protect the foam from the heat of the genny.

I was also thinking of using moving blankets with a layer of masonite instead of the foam / masonite combo. - Any one got any other good / light weight sound insulation ideas? (Carpeting maybe?)

Do you mind telling us what the total cost came out to?

Also, would you be able to run the gennie in the rain?
 
Hiya. The exhaust silencer with install was R1500. The box another R1500 with free rain cover. (for buying both). The gutter piping with bends and attachments from builders was around R300. Goes up 2 stories.

Running it in the rain? Not sure. I'd probably want to do a bit of extra weather proofing myself on the box.

It's coated in flash harry apparently but I'd still rather have some more protection over the fan side. Also the box is open at the bottom so I'd probably like to raise the Gennys a bit with a motor cycle tyre or small spare wheel tyre.
 
I did some work again this weekend. A bit of a challenge for me as its my first project of this sort. But I am getting there. Won't quite look as nice as yours :) but I'll still give a a good paint job afterwards. Cut out the space for the one louver this weekend and fitted it. Will try and do the other side next weekend and then its the floor and top left.
 
Hi guys,so before anything,I’ve heard a generator in one of these Jh generator silent boxes and it made the noise louder in fact,so I’d hold onto my pocket if I were you
 
I’m a generator technician and I’ve just finished building a silent box which you’re going to love,as for the dbs,I highly doubt the JH box is below 110
