Genesis is developing EREV version of GV70
According to the latest reports, South Korean auto giant Hyundai, under its luxury brand Genesis, is developing an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) version of its popular GV70 SUV. This is a significant shift for Genesis as it ventures into hybrid territory for the first time.
The GV70 EREV, currently under development at the Hyundai and Kia Namyang Research Institute, aims to redefine hybrid technology. EREVs are a unique class of electric vehicles designed to extend the electric driving range through an onboard internal combustion engine. Although technically electric vehicles, EREVs function differently from plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) since only the electric motor is used for propulsion. In contrast, the combustion engine is used as a generator to keep the battery charged.
One key differentiator between EREVs and traditional PHEVs is the range. While conventional PHEVs offer a limited electric range of around 100 km at best, EREVs are designed to surpass 200 km on pure electric power. The GV70 EREV is projected to boast a total driving range exceeding 900 km, combining electric and gasoline power.
This extended range comes courtesy of a larger battery pack than we can find in standard PHEVs. It not only enhances the electric driving range but also shifts the primary mode of operation to electric power, with the internal combustion engine acting as a backup to recharge the battery on the go.

Updated Genesis GV70 gets a Tesla NACS connector and bigger battery
The Genesis Electrified GV70 has always been a bit of a dark horse in the electric SUV race. Stylish, powerful, and comfortable, it somehow hasn't quite captured the spotlight like some of its Hyundai Motor Group siblings. But with the release of the 2026 model, Genesis hopes that embracing Tesla's charging technology will turn its fortunes around.
One of the most significant updates to the 2026 Electrified GV70 is the addition of a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port. This means drivers can now conveniently charge their vehicles at Tesla Supercharger stations without needing an adapter. While the previous model had a charging port at the front, it relied on the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard. Genesis hasn't abandoned CCS entirely, though. The 2026 Electrified GV70 will include an adapter for CCS DC fast chargers, making sure drivers can still access the vast network of over 36,000 charging stations across the United States.
Genesis has also added a motorized charging port door, replacing the previous manual release, and added an integrated heating element to prevent ice buildup in cold weather. Improved lighting around the port should make finding and using it at night an easy task.
The 2026 Electrified GV70 comes with a larger 84 kWh battery, replacing the previous 77.4 kWh unit. While official range figures are not yet available, this upgrade is bound to extend the SUV's driving distance significantly. The dual-motor powertrain stays the same, delivering 429 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque.

Anyone for galaxy-inspired ambient lighting too? Oh good
Two years on from its debut, the Genesis GV70 Electrified is getting a revised multi-crest grille and ornate new headlight signatures as part of its mid-cycle refresh. Still handsome, we’d say.
The reworked front bumper loses the air inlets out wide for a sharper look, while 20in twin-spoke alloys occupy the flanks. There’s extra chrome garnish out back and (apparently) a more aero-friendly rear wing. Probably won’t push the car down like the spoiler on a GT3 RS, mind.
Inside, it’s still much the same story: very white and very grandiose. The main addition is the 27in OLED display, which combines the driving and infotainment screens into one unit and works with a new Bang and Olufsen audio system.
Fan of ambient lighting, are you? Genesis has now included a ‘Milky Way’ pattern, which we suspect mimics… the Milky Way. Space, not chocolate. Given the diamond-quilted massage seats and electronically controlled suspension, you should be snug in there.

Genesis has unveiled a new look for the Electrified GV70, its flagship electric SUV.
Chief among the changes is a reworked front end with more prominent air intakes, injecting it with a sportier look.
The headlights also get new lenses that are said to provide better illumination.
At the rear, the indicators have been integrated into the brake lights and there is a thinner brake light mounted in the rear spoiler.
Inside, the GV70’s 15.4in infotainment touchscreen and separate digital instrument display are combined into a single panel that measures 27in diagonally.
The control panel for the car’s heating and air conditioning systems has also been moved down, onto the centre console.
Completing the suite of changes is a new steering wheel with a different centre boss.
