I did a new install of gentoo had no real problems with installation except apps(any program administration tools, firefox etc) take to long to start I would say around 20+ seconds. Once they do start though no problems with it.
Specs:
Laptop 1.5GHz celeron M
778Mb RAM
1,5Gig Swap
80Gig Sata drive
Gnome

Any help would be appreciated.

What version of Gentoo? What install, Stage 1, 2, 3 or the GUI install?

What apps exactly or is it a general slowness, like even X takes long to load?

Firefox is not really a benchmark on Linux, since no matter how strong a machine you have it will take a bit of time to start-up on its first run. Thereafter you should be settled.

Having said that, a 1,5Ghz Celeron CPU is no record breaker in anyone's book, and you will even find that in Windows the apps will be sluggish, but 20seconds is a bit slow even for that chip. On my 1,8 Celeron apps usually started up within 5 seconds at the slowest.

Okay, enough babble. Did you do any optimisation on the install or is it a dead standard install?
You could also provide us with:
emerge --info
rc-update -s
for general info regarding your installation.

Lets see if we can give your laptop a bit of a kick on the backside speed wise!
:P

Thanks for the reply, I did some googling found something about a bug in feisty
so anyway the guy suggested adding the pc name in /etc/hosts (127.0.0.1 localhost pcname) and I thought eh what the hell. It seems to running pretty good now apps opening in 2-3 seconds

I think he is using Gnome in Gentoo, and then yes, that would be a mayor problem if your hosts file is not defined. Gnome will take ages to load and all gtk apps will be very unresponsive.

Had this same problem with gnome in the beginning of the year.

Glad you are sorted!
