Hi guys,

Anyone tried to install Gentoo 2008.0-r1 on VMware Workstation 7.0.0 build-203739?

I want to do this, but I run into my 1st problem...

What version of Linux is Gentoo ?

Stupid question, but it's asking me and I'm not sure what to choose...

I'd imagine you're looking for the kernel version?
uname -r

edit: erm which isn't going to help you if gentoo isn't already installed :)

I don't have another PC to install Gentoo on so I have to revert to VMWare.

Gives you all the types of Linux OS's but Gentoo is not listed, at the bottom of the list is:

Other Linux 2.6.x kernel
Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit
Other Linux 2.4.x kernel
Other Linux 2.4.x kernel 64-bit
Other Linux 2.2.x kernel

It is any of those?

Go for the latest kernel, it's gentoo so you'll be able to use the latest cutting edge source code for it.

Depends on whether you gonna install gentoo 32bit or gentoo 64bit, but generally speaking between these 2:

Other Linux 2.6.x kernel
Other Linux 2.6.x kernel 64-bit

If you do not know the difference between the 2.4 and 2.6 kernel then I seriously doubt if you are going to get Gentoo running.

Have you had a read through the Gentoo handbook yet? Gentoo is NOT Ubuntu.
:p

I did a Gentoo install on Virtualbox under Kubuntu and completed the base install without problems, but 95% though the Gnome install I ran out of inodes :( , so don't skimp on virtual harddisk space.

'df -i' displays inodes used/free.

That seems to be working...

Where there is a will, there is a way. :)

I am struggling with the Mac OSX install DVD (Hackintoch version) at the mo, it just doesnt like my Fujitsu-Siemens Celeron notebook.

Ok, I have tried the "normal" kernel install, now its time for the "voodoo" kernel. :wtf:
