Geographic Number Portability kicks in

Posted last week on MyBB..... Imagine the chaos at both telco's call centres in future!!!
 
Once again, consumer is a "poor cousin" on the parade...
I suppose for your average Joe Blogs it does not matter what number he is using.. but than again.. its not about that....

Guess all we can do is sit and wait our turn...
 
I am wondering??? and I think it is reasonably clear from the article that it is not possible, but am still wondering.

Will one be able to port a Telkom number (or Neotel) geographically?? or is that a different thing ie. number for life? IOW can I keep my Telkom (fixed line) Cape Town Number when I move to Polokwane and use Telkom fixed line there?
 
great start but still poor performance. and honestly even if I could port my number to neotel I wouldn't. Neotel doesn't really care about consumers and their pricing model is really still full of BS and their coverage #$^!@#%#$@^ so...

And why is it so difficult in this country for things to be implemented all together in one go? its like porting 1000 numbers is easier then 1? and these 1000 numbers aren't always in a chain.
 
Neotel first must get a month-to-month option instead of locking their users in for 24 months.

Then we will talk again.
 
I seriously doubt that Neotel will be bringing out a month to month option because of their retard devices. They could have gone the clever route and made it so you can use any cdma device but noooo this is mos souf efrika where they are by law (it seems) required to shaft the consumer. So make the device cost 2k and then say to the consumer "ok you can have pay as you go and month to month but pay us 2k for the device upfront". And I seriously doubt that the device is even costing them R500 since they would have bought in massive quantities.

Im also curious however if this applies internally to Telkom. can I migrate my telkom line from durban to jhb and keep my durban number but with the new dialing code obviously.
 
No what GNP means is you keep your number if, at the same address, you change from N to T or T to N. If you move house, you get a new number. It is not number for life like a mobile customer.
 
I wouldn't advise anyone to port just yet. I have 1000 on net Neotel minutes a month that go to waste. As well an sms bundle. I don't know anyone who I can call to use up those mins. I only got Neotel for the bandwidth which has been sucky lately :(
 
geographic numbers, as well as portability, are defined by ICASA. They state that porting cannot occur across geocodes (the geocodes being the 011, 012, 031, 021 etc). So while it is technically possible to have a "number for life" no matter where you move to within the Country, legislation does not allow for it

Isn't that a bit back-to-front? Surely you should be advising everyone else to port, so that you've got someone to call for free? In any case, if some large companies do now port, there'll be more Neotel numbers to call anyway, which will start to make some of the free minutes worth it.
 
How will you know of you are dialling a Telkom or Neotel number if they are in the same number ranges? All of a sudden your free minutes are worthless...
 
GNP with LLU would have made a difference, but GNP on its own is pretty useless (for me at least).

Porting of 1000 and 10000 block went live first because there will be less volume than for individual numbers. The 1000/10000 blocks that are being ported must have contiguous numbers

Theoretically. How would anyone know that large company is now on Neotel if they simply ported their Telkom numbers? Unless they advertised the fact you're still back to where you were - useless 1000 on-net minutes 'cause you don't know!
