Independent telecoms service provider, Switch Telecom, has received allocations of ranges of geographic numbers in the Johannesburg (010), Cape Town (021) and Durban (031) regions from the regulator, ICASA.

I believe this is an industry first. While various providers have offered geographic DIDs in the past by converted Telkom ISDN into VoIP, this appears to be the first proper allocation - by ICASA - of geographic numbers directly to a VoIP provider.

Roll on geographic number portability!

:):) moving forward slowly...

Yes! These numbers are now reachable from Vodacom, MTN and Cell C (including Virgin). Telkom have given an indicative date of approximately 15 May by which they expect to have completed the routing from their network. Most of the smaller operators will be able to reach these numbers as soon as Telkom complete routing.

From our side, everything is in place and we will be ready to provide service on these numbers to clients from the minute they're reachable from Telkom's network.

In fact, if you want to reserve your numbers, we can take pre-orders now. :-)

You know what numbers I've reserved :D

Looks like this will go one step further on 18 May when Telkom introduces geographic number portability between fixed line operators.

Just to confirm, geographic numbers are now available from Switch Telecom in the 010, 012, 021 and 031 ranges.
