This situation is very similar to the fees must fall days of 2015/16/17; there was a genuine cause, the country's leadership (ANC, DA, EFF... all of them) and institutes didn't care much, then the cause was hijacked by politics and violence. Then, media outlets choose to focus on everything else other than the cause (the violence and outrage will bring clicks, likes, and money).

One thing is for sure, the notion of situations like these being "African solutions to African problems" has been thrown out the window.
