Hundreds of New York Police Department officers turned their backs to Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) at the Tuesday funeral for slain Officer Miosotis Familia, The New York Daily News reported.

The backlash stems from rising tensions after de Blasio traveled to Germany last week to speak at a protest during the Group of 20 summit, one day after Familia was killed.

- Thousands of city police officers turned their backs Sunday as they watched Mayor Bill de Blasio eulogize an officer shot dead with his partner, repeating a stinging display of scorn for the mayor despite entreaties from the police commissioner not to do so.


The show of disrespect came outside the funeral home where Officer Wenjian Liu was remembered as an incarnation of the American dream: a man who had immigrated at age 12 and devoted himself to helping others in his adopted country. The gesture, among officers watching the mayor's speech on a screen, added to tensions between the mayor and rank-and-file police even as he sought to quiet them.

Portland officials beg Oregon Gov. Kate Brown to deploy National Guard after denials

Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler and U.S. Attorney Billy J. Williams pleaded Monday for Gov. Kate Brown to call up the National Guard, saying she has been asked repeatedly but has so far refused to send troops to help “desperate” officers besieged by rioting.


“I spoke to the governor three or four times yesterday,” Mr. Wheeler said at a press conference. “I did make the request on all three of those occasions for support from the National Guard. The governor had alternative strategies that she suggested, including deploying more state police resources.”


He also said he agreed with Mr. Williams, the U.S. attorney for Oregon, who said law enforcement is in “desperate harm’s way” in the face of the increasingly violent and destructive protests.
