Georgia to consider hosting US mly base
Friday, March 13, 2009
TBILISI: Ex-Soviet Georgia would seriously consider hosting a US military base if asked and is prepared to act as a transit route for Western forces in Afghanistan, senior Georgian officials said on Thursday.

“If the United States thinks it wants to establish a base, we will seriously consider it,” Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze told Japan’s Nikkei newspaper in an interview published on Thursday. He emphasised, however, that the US and Georgia were not currently holding talks on the issue.

Georgia’s deputy foreign minister, Giga Bokeria, said that as well as hosting a base the country was prepared to act as a conduit for troops and supplies to Afghanistan.

“Georgia was and remains ready to cooperate with the United States both on the deployment of US bases on Georgian territory, if the US expresses such a desire, and in using Georgian territory as a transit route to Afghanistan,” he said.

oh that will go down well with the russians.

The Russians are happy the war is going badly for the West in Afghanistan and they're doing all they can to impede the West in carrying out it's anti-Taleban/Al Quada activities BUT at the same time the last thing Russia would want would be to have Taleban again in charge of Afghanistan.
It's just an anti-Western thing and typical of their strategy, whatever the West wants - choose the opposite although as said in this case, it can only go so far,
as the Taleban hates the Russian forces as much or even more than the West.

They won't be asked. In fact NATO has decided not to offer them membership either.

Not to be trusted and never have been as any Russian will tell you.

The Georgians are obviously seeking American protection from the Russians.

The Americans have not offered. The Georgians are fishing.
They don't need protection if they aren't going to invade of commit genocide.

Why fight in Afghanistan? Seriously? It was one of the causes of collapse of the Soviet Union and hell, Afghan and the USSR were really close border-wise and the USSR was a great military power and still couldn't win.

America is so far away, I don't know what they are thinking, unless they nuke the whole country, they will never win

The USSR were doing quit well after being invited in to Afghanistan. They had the opposition on the run until the CIA started sending in mortars and stingers.

I think the US should be grateful the Russians haven't supplied the Taliban side. With their masses of spare armaments, NATO wouldn't last a week.

As it stands, Russia controls large areas of aid access into the country.

Georgia sent a lot of troops to Iraq (over 2000), so perhaps they will now be deployed in Afghanistan.

maybe the americans need a place to ship the drugs they are getting from afghanistan.

The last thing Russia wants is Taliban in charge of Afghanistan.

If push comes to shove there is an alternative route from China through the Tajik controlled Wakhan corridor.

My bets' on the West pulling out within 1-2 years and we'll see Afghanistan fall back into Taleban hands and then Russia will not be very happy at all.

Those bases are places the US decided to squat during a war and then never left.

Oh yes the various wars for oil like Vietnam or Korea. Oh wait

Caserma Ederle est: 1965. What war for oil ravaged Italy in the 60's?

France kicked them out, they had over 60 bases over there after the way and way up until the late 50's.

The French kicked out NATO forces in the 60's and obviously the Americans went with them

If you took my oil comment that seriously you should cool down, it was not meant to be serious but an obvious joke.

The US wasn't desp for oil in those days, they had their own. Now it's run out, the motives have changed from idealism to pragmatism.
