Gerdus van Eeden is currently the Chief Technology officer at MultiChoice, a position he has held since December 2001. His portfolio includes ultimate responsibility at general management level for all MultiChoice South Africa and MultiChoice Africa’s broadcast technology infrastructure over the entire value chain (i.e. from content acquisition right through to the decoder in a subscriber’s home. It includes the entire technology life-cycle from conceptualisation, business modelling, specification, development, implementation, operation, maintenance to end-of-life management.

Prior to this Gerdus was based at Irdeto Access in Netherlands for 2 years. Whilst in Netherlands he also worked at Mindport BV

Gerdus also gained valuable experience at Orbicom in his position as Manager of Satellite and Digital Technology as well as a Development Engineer: Satellite Systems based at SABC/ Sentech.

Gerdus has a list of achievements which include: he was instrumental in uplinking the world’s first DVB-S test transmission to a satellite in early 1994 (from Randburg, RSA),established the DSTV broadcast infrastructure in 1994 for Multichoice – the first commercial DVB-S based digital satellite system, headed up Mindport’s solution business in 1998, and he headed up Irdeto’s customer service and solutions division.

In 2002 he consolidated MultiChoice’s broadcast technology division leading the group to greatly improve on service levels and network availability. In 2003 he headed the team that
launched the world’s first single-unit dual view decoder for MultiChoice and in 2005 launched the cutting-edge dual view PVR for Multichoice.

Gerdus holds an honours degree in B.Eng (Industrial) from the University of Pretoria
