so i'm bit of a fattened geek, are totally out of shape and unfit, any real good advice as to start where to get some general definition and being more fit/healthy ? (yes up too the level of being out of breath while climbing like 30 stairs).

now to the article spotted on health 24. i can't totally agree with this, however diet does help, but diet drinks no and 150 crunches each morning ? going to ****up your back...

Get a six-pack... by accident
Chances are you don’t have abs like Jake Gyllenhaal in Prince of Persia. But then, chances are you haven’t spent the last three months living on dry chicken breasts and prunes while doing three hours of weights twice a day, either.

Those totally ripped high definition movie star abs? Not really attainable, unless you are significantly genetically blessed and:

a) are 17 and surf all day,

b) have no work and a serious narcissism problem, or

c) exercise as part of your day job.

That said, all is not lost.

You just have to focus on the two main elements: honing muscle, whilst losing fat. A limp, scrawny waist doesn’t have much beach babe pulling power and neither does the tautest six-pack when it’s hidden under a layer of flab.

Try to incorporate the following easy changes into your life and while you might not end up being able to bounce bottles off your abs, you could well find yourself with a six-pack that’s worth peeling off your t-shirt for.

1. If there’s an option, go low fat. Pick the Diet Coke over the Coke. Drink whiskey instead of beer. Pick the Monkeygland steak sauce rather than the creamy mushroom. You know the rules... just start applying them. These little choices seriously add up.

2. Ab definition is all about core strength. And nothing beats subconscious, accidental core building like replacing your office chair with a stability ball. Not only that, but it’ll funk up your office space while you’re at it... trust me.

3. Crunch, crunch, crunch! Before your shower every morning – before you’ve even thought about it – crank out a set of 50 crunches, building up to 2 or 3 sets each morning. Remember the crunch basics: it’s not about getting your back off the floor, like an old fashioned sit-up, it’s about drawing on your abs when you get your shoulders off the floor. If you’re not sure you’ve got the motion right (i.e.: if you aren’t convinced you’ve targeted your abs without straining your back) check out our awesome video.

Its a pretty general article, and has some merits. Cut down your calories, do some crunches, blah blah.

I doubt that this alone will help that much. Unless you're getting the heart rate up for a proper period of time it'll hardly do anything.

But just counting calories isn't enough either. It depends of what makes up the calories.

Paleolithic diet. Hard to follow, works like a bomb. Basically low carb,no sugar, high protein lots of veg and fruits and fat(natural).

I lost 7kg in 2-3 months while on it.

That is so wrong.

Cut the coke be it diet or normal. Eat a fruit or drink 100% fruit juice rather or have a glass of water . Don't pick the monkeygland sauce cut out the sauce totally.

If you really want to lose weight you need to make sacrifices, if you want to go from tubby to 6 pack you can bet your bottom dollar you best look into health foods. Stomach muscles are quick and easy to get, removing the fat hiding them is the bitch :D.

Animals cuts will also move things along :D.

What a joke. There is no easy way to get a 6-pack. I've been gymming regularly for like 8 years and I don't have a 6-pack. Cutting down from Coke to Diet Coke won't do it. Ab crunches before work won't do it.
Serious dedication - i.e. 1 hour workout 5 days a week - combined with dietary supplements - combined with a stringent protein-based diet - that's how you can get a 6-pack. And even then there is no guarantee that your body type is inclined to display the abdominal muscles.

I can do 100 sit-ups effortlessly, but still no sign of a six-pack :(
Hidden behind a bit of fat maybe, but if I lose more weight I'll look anorexic.

Remember that everyone has a six pack, it is not 'built up' muscle - it depends on your genetics whether it is shaped nicely or not
Someone with a more lengthy bone structure will not have such an accented core muscle group.
Cut the fat, and then see - if there is nothing there, you cant 'create' the base muscle that supports your lower back and core - its already there, you can just sculpt the already existing form (unfortunately)

I tend to agree with you. Although it didn't take me 8 years to get a six pack :D I really do train hard and try to eat right. There's just no shortcuts with these kinds of stuff IMO.

totally disagree with the 150 crunches in the morning, total waste of time. to get a six pack you first of all have to lower your body fat content in total, 150 crunches won't do much for that. instead, rather go run for 10 minutes in the morning to kick start your metabolism and eat proper breakfast.

this is my advice to get you started.

If you can't run for 10 mins, walk for 4, run for 1, walk for 4, run for 1... it will get easier by the day.

Re the sauces on your steak, leave them all. leave everything creamy and especially leave the sugar and trans fats.

Sorry for the thread necro but after seeing Sharukh Khan with 8 Pack abs at age 49 I'm determined to do something about my belly.

There's no excuse. It can be done.

I have no memory of making that comment. Still don't have a 6 pack. Maybe that should be a real goal this year. It's absolutely to do with my eating habits.

You can practically ignore the crunches. Just diet. Lots of water, chicken and salads. Even cut out bread, rice and pasta for the first 3 months. It worked for me!

Is there some kind of thread-necro competition going on that I don't know about?

For some reason, peachydragon is necroing any thread related to exercise or body composition.

I suspect he went to google and typed in:
