Great Article. Now if we could only get someone in govermerment, who gives a ****, to read it, maybe we could stir things up a bit.
It's got nothing to do with leftist ideology. There are tons of socialist governments that provide cheap and effective communication for their people. I am going to say this loud and clear, South Africa is not a socialist government! It is a capitalist government with economic policies similar to Margret Thatcher's.
Anyway, the point being is that the failure of the South African communication policy has been overregulation, protection of the incumbents and ineffective/inefficient competition. BEE should shoulder a large portion of the blame, a lot of the profit of Telkom has gone into a narrow set of BEE hands who have hampered the rollout of competition, simply to keep their coffers full. BEE is a handout scheme for a minority that is subsidised by the bye the South African consumer.

I think the point here is Govmnt needs to stay out of the industry, they dont exactly have the best track record with their “managed liberalisation” and therefore should rather fund a public sector driven initiative or stay out of the game alltogether.

The BEE stakeholders (AKA "struggle buddies") are making a killing from telkom and have the power to hold up competition in the sector by virtue of goverment officials being their friends, neighbours and family! It's so blatantly obvious.

Somewhere along the line in the last 10 years, the ANC became utterly corrupted by big business. The former comrades are utterly focused on their own enrichment and the people be damned. BEE is definitely needed. What we have instead however, is the entire economy focused on filling up the bank accounts of a small influencial clique. The gap between rich and poor is growing. We have a health minister intent on national genocide. Corruption has become the business of government. And I don't mean nonsenese like the JZ fiasco. I mean corruption on a massive scale such as the entire Telco sector being (legaly) perverted to make a handful of super rich ex-comrades into obscenely rich ex-comrades. The poor have no hope, and the government doesn't care.
All African governments end up screwing their own people and this one is no different. We need an economic revolution but those that "have" will just bitch and keep on paying and those that "don't have" will keep on resenting those that have. How ironic but oh so ideal for the current fat cats!
