If you're tired of hearing about Windows 7's upcoming features while you sit and stare at your aging XP or Vista desktop, take solace in a few free apps and themes that can give you a taste right now. While it's true that Windows 7 isn't much different from Windows Vista (inside and out), a few neat features are worth trying out, and you can do it without installing the Windows 7 Preview. Here are a few free apps and alternatives that simulate Windows 7's built-in features.

Interesting will give them a try.

Wez don't be so angry your whole life man.

I'm not angry not angry at all nope not angry I'm sure I'm not angry then again What does ms really have to offer in window's 7 just another bloated OS

Why has bloated software become such an issue ?

Resource hungry I can understand, but drive space is hardly an issue these days.

I'm using the theme and tried a few of the other tools but they aren't really as good as the Windows 7 build itself, especially the taskbar.

Looking forward to the feature complete beta. :D

Ya i don't get it either daveza, your entry level hdd is now a 160 gig drive, so vista uses 25gb wow i feel sorry for people with 1 tb drives, its going to seriously affect them :p

well ekhaat i tried many vista themes for xp and nothing is even remotely close to vista itself :)

I don't use Vista, but would you say XP is a resource hungry OS ?

Plain vanilla installation, no additional apps.

Bear in mind that we still have the option of disabling unneeded services

Windows 7 lets you pin programs and documents to your taskbar (instead of or in addition to creating shortcuts on your desktop). However, it's easy to do something very similar right now: using the built-in (but disabled by default) Quick Launch toolbar.
Whoop-dee-doo! Let me run and install windows just for that feature!!... Wait a second.. you could do that back on windows 95 if you installed IE4..

I don't think xp is a resource hog but i mean you need 2 gig of memory if your doing heavy stuff with xp.

Vista is not a resource hog either just needs alot of memory 2 gig or more, considering the price of memory i don't see the problem.
Xp is good for your older computers i think, but if you have a decent pc with atleast 2 gig memory vista is king :)

anyways lets get into a linux/windowsxp/vista debate :p

You know, I just don't get the linux/Microsoft thing.

I last used Unix about ten years ago, and Win 3.1 was more fun.

I like lots of colours and ' kewl ' stuff and I just remember Linux as being dull and boring ( and complicated ).

Doesn't mean Linux is cr^p or Windows is better - I just prefer one over the other.

I use quite a few open-source apps - foobar for example. It's quick and simple, but I cant say the same for the bulk of these. By the time I figured out how to actually get them to work they would either be obsolete or it would be time to reformat again.

I've had windows 7 features for months already, I use Linux. I just game on Vista that's all it's good for.

No he didn't its just including linux in a windows argument is pointless as linux will always come second best :p

/stirs the pot

Aahh, you forgot about Linux... :D

linux is one of those spectators, just checking out the fight....it can't compete.

why linux boys? why?

Because there are plenty more apps for Windows, than linux. and thats a fact.

Look at the Linux noobs mocking a subject they know nothing about.

/I laugh at the ignorance while my Linux machine runs XP to run propriety stuff.

We need a dedicated "OS wars" section. With "gloves on" and "gloves off" sub-sections:D
