A Japanese firm has developed what may well prove to be the most important new technology discovery of all time. Although this technology is not brand new (first displayed in 2006), AIST have developed a way for a very small, portable device to focus laser beams on pockets of air to such a high temperature it becomes plasma.
Using this technique, they are able to draw rapidly moving animations, in 3d, in unconditioned, natural air. Although AIST are marketing this device as being able to draw safety signs, SOS signals, advertising, etc, I think we all can see the one true application for this technology.
That's right. I'm talking lightsabers.
Real, cut-through-just-about-anything-on-a-single-swipe, lightsabers.
Of course, there's no sound reason yet why sabers using this technology would stop when they hit another such saber, but that's a mere technical detail the engineers can sort out.
I'm now off to find out how to put in an order for one.
