Getting 4MB line, what to expect?

Hey guys :)

Ok so today I realized that I will only pay R80 more to upgrade from a 512 line to 4mb, so I did it. Oh yeah, I'm at Telkom. The speed should be effective from the first of next month.

So what can I expect? I mean in terms of actual download speed (I think I'm shaped though, so normal http download speed)? I'm a block away from the switch in any way so I think the ping will be very fast.

And then the other thing, please don't laugh: I have only 3Gb cap, and now a 4mb line, I know :o But I am planning on getting uncapped as soon as Telkom comes to their senses. I read an article stating that Telkom will reveal their new prices in May. Does anybody know roughly how competitive these prices might be compared to Mweb etc?

Are you considering moving to MWeb? If not, are you on some type of contract with Telkom?

Ok I didn't want to reveal this earlier because I was afraid that people will track my IP and assassinate me, but what the hell. I work for Telkom. So I get employee prices, which are quite good. So in the end when the new prices are implemented I will probably pay less at Telkom, even if their prices are higher than Mweb. But it depends on exactly how much higher.

EDIT: Snap back to topic... I think you'd experience full 4Meg speeds because you say you're close to the exchange. In my experience, I've had 400KB/s HTTP speeds from Telkom most of the time but on busy days it can average around 320KB/s

Ok thanx, that's about the same as I get on MTN HSDPA. But I'm still wondering about Telkom's uncapped, I really hope the pricing isn't too bad... I called a few of the guys "higher up" but they also seem to be in the dark.

OK, but I don't really mind if people know who I am??? Lots of people work for telkom and they don't get killed in rows everyday. Or if you are talking about the image I edited, I really don't care. I'm just joking around :)

Just referring to your attitude wrt to your employer, people have been dismissed for less, joke or not.

When talking about Telkom I am almost always satirical...

And I don't think that Telkom are monitoring the online activities of all their thousands of employees, and in any way, employees with experience are scarce these days.

But seriously, can we get back to the topic: How competitive are Telkom's prices likely to be?
 
sitnet, only the mods have access to the IPs of the forum users. None of them strike me as the assassin type. ;)

I reckon Telkom will undercut everything out there. If not with price then with features (10g local style). They have raw scale on their side & also line rental which can cross subsidize undercutting.

You can expect to be blasted away if you are used to 512. You will get 420Kb/s, especially if you make use of a download manager.Why should be heavily shaped?you might at times even get a bit more if you are so close to the exchange. You can be expect to see that your 3GB cap is rubbish and that you will have to buy a second account.:D

I don't expect that Telkom would better their pricing. The standard has been set by the other ISP's. Even if Telkom could better the price by R100.00, why would they?

Agreed. Telkom would probably equal the current price that is snatching the customers up because then they have just as much of a chance to snatch customers up on top of their already massive database of people.
 
OK I AM OFFICIALLY BLASTED AWAY!!!!

This speed is crazy! I got my Line today, but was already capped:( But then bought 1GB:D

The speed is amazing, I get 420KBPS. Videos don't even load, it's unbelievable.

I am so glad that 512 and 384 is going to fall away in any way (from telkom that is), only 4Mb, 8Mb, and the later to be seen 12Mb will be available. But dammit, then I will once again have the slowest internet!!!!
 
Ok I have another question: How do I know if I am getting shaped?


The things in on the majority of websites I only get 30 - 60 KBps, but Speedtest.net shows 3.5 Mbps??? Youtube at least loads at 1Mbps but most of the websites I download from downloads at 60KBps max.

Why is that, I am getting shaped so aggressively?

Probably cos you boosted your data?? Are they Intl sites or local too?
