Thanks

When you say cycling on the road do you mean leisurely pedaling for fun, or commuting, or racing on the road?

My suggestion would be to get a mountain bike so I might be of little use as you claim no off-road.

I would still say get a mountain bike though as it is far more useful. No worries hopping off pavements and negotiating less than perfect roads etc.

Even though you claim to not want anything fancy I'd still avoid those Game/Makro specials.

I am looking at cycling just casually also.

Don't go to cycle shops, they try sell you bicycles for R3k - R4k.
Either get second hand or get the Game / Makro specials.
Stick to the ones without the rear suspension and that rubbish. Just get something light.

No point getting something fancy if you are not going to stick to it.

Price range of a mountain bike ?

Thats kinda steep..

R2600 is actually cheap for a "proper" bike. The only way you will get cheaper is if you go to Game/Makro and grab one of their specials. This may suffice for your needs but if you even get slightly bitten by the bug you will be unsatisfied before very long.

In saying that, a R1k-R1.5k Game special is better than no bike at all...

But you're wrong. Rather walk than ride a Game special eeeeuw i'd go as far as to lie down in the street and roll where I want to go.

Ha ha, but he stated he was wanting to get fit. If he will definitely roll around then your solution might be feasible! ;) It is not normal for me to suggest a Game special but if someone feels that R2.6k is too much for a bike then they are left with little choice unless they consider a 5+ year old entry level second hand bike.

I worked as a mechanic in a bike shop some years ago. A lady brought in a Game special she bought her husband for Christmas and wanted some quick releases, bottle cage, etc added.
The gears wouldn't work, the frame couldn't fit a bottle, the rims were very very untrue, the brakes weren't working.

In my experience with those cheapies.... goedkoop koop is duur koop.

Won't really get a proper bike cheaper than R3.5 ~ R4k

That does depend on the definition of proper. As someone mentioned you can get a 2012 Silverback Stride for around R2100. But then you are looking at Tourney components, V-brake etc.

I took a peek at the Makro Christmas catalogue. You can get 26" bikes there starting at around R1200. I can't even comment on specs as a search for "totem mountain bikes" online only brings up links to Makro! I'd really find the extra R900 if I were the OP.

Ok guys, you'll have made compelling arguments, so where about in Durban may I find a proper bike ?

Just bit the bullet and bought a Mongoose Tyax Comp 26'er for R3999 (clearance stock - last one left at Sportsman's Warehouse in Rondebosch. Normally sells for R4695 (cheapest I could find or R4999 at Sportsman's) so I think I got a deal.

I bought the basics with it. Spare tube, basic toolkit thing (allen keys etc all in 1 unit). Anything else anyone would recommend other than LED's for nigh riding / a computer to track distance etc.

Thanks,
J

I got a "standard" bike off Gumtree for R600. Then I changed the saddle for something more comfortable and also got a helmet
