Getting a bicycle

Do not buy a Game bike if you plan on using it for more than a year.

I've had my entry level Giant Rincon for about 5 years (or longer) and put more than 10 000km on it. I have replaced the chain and the cassette, front gears (my fault for leaving the chain too long) and a few of the internal wear parts in the hubs. I still have the original front suspension, never been serviced or opened and it still works.

Game bicycles you're looking at front springs being gone in 6 months.

Total cost was +-R3500.

Considering I would have had to replace a game bicycle every year, this was a bloody bargain.

This is a very entry level bicycle used mainly for road and a bit of offroad. I have done a bit of dirt jumping on it as well when I was younger. I've done some rougher offroad well which the bicycle isn't marketed for at all without a problem.

I bought the basics with it. Spare tube, basic toolkit thing (allen keys etc all in 1 unit). Anything else anyone would recommend other than LED's for nigh riding / a computer to track distance etc.

Thanks,
J

A HELMET! Which I'm going to assume you got but never mentioned.

Don't worry with all the other things to keep up with the Joneses. In due course you can get the mini pump, multi tool, cycling cleats, padded shorts, cycling jerseys, hydration pack, clip in pedals, etc etc etc.... it can be an experience hobby but try can do it just fine at first with a bike, helmet, T-shirt, shorts and takkies.

And is you have a smartphone then don't worry with the fancy gps computer either. Use Endomondo, Sportstracker or one of the many other apps.
