Quick question: What if I found the car I like but it doesn't come in like a manual transmission?

Would you still go for it? I know my friends would probably mock me :/

Spend enough time in stop and go tracffic and you will start wishing for a automatic. Dont let whatever your friends "think" of you dictate what car should get

You're right hey, I don't really care what people think but I just don't want be put down. It's weird, usually it's harder to find automatics than manuals but it seems like the other way around now lol.

Thanks! Will check the site out too.

You must be frikkin joking??

If you have to worry about your friends' negative reaction, then they aren't your friends, and you are too young and immature to own anything.

Screw your friends and grow a pair FFS!

Depend on the car and type of transmission, I find a 4 speed automatic is kind of sucky, would rather have a manual, especially if still young. An automatic is appreciated if you intend to sit for an hour in slowly crawling 20km/h highway traffic or if older.

It's not just that, I'd like to also get a manual because it's more fun and I'd like to be able to drive one.

Immature?
No.

+1 for auto, your leg will thank you if you sit in traffic quite a bit,

So next year is my 21st birthday and my parents said instead of giving me one of those parties, they would rather get me a car which I'm happy with.

I just need to think of some good and reasonably priced ones. I'll be getting a second hand car, can you give me some suggestions?

Not more than 150K will be great.

I'm a guy, so keep that in mind :D

If your parents love you then they wont buy you a vivo(hijack risk).

Go for the cheapest "newish" vehicle, factor in a maintenance plan into the cost and ask your folks to get insurance quotes on all the cars you are considering. I am under 25,i have been a nominated driver on my parents insurance in the past and insurance premiums are a biatch. Get a vehicle that is safe, reliable and fun to drive. You dont need the best vehicle when you are a student and the novelty of having a vehicle disappears after a while.

Wait for the new ford figo launching in November this year 2015-Ford-Figo-Concept-2.jpg
or buy a Hyundai grand i10. You shouldn't be considering an older car with an automatic gearbox, i dont think your parents will appreciate the costs associated with repairs.
Aim for a car that is a max of 140k and ask your folks to get a maintenance plan with the reminder of budget.

You are 21 so I think your legs can manage not having an auto and f what your friends think about your car. You are 21 not 16,you shouldnt base your purchasing.decision on which vehicle will impress your friends.

+1 to that. I was going to buy one but found a 1.6t sport for 16k more so was a no brainer.
Sexy looking cars.

Go for it! 1.6T is an incredible machine, very underrated and yes, these are sexy cars. In fact, park it next to a Auris or Golf or Focus... you get the picture. Astra J is a beautiful car, not without faults, but beautiful.

Tired of this advice over & over.

To OP: Don't let the "hijack risk" of a car you want be the ultimate deciding factor.

The Vivo is very good 1st car choice still even though it's built on an older platform.

This is SA; you could very be hijacked in a RR (Rolls Royce).
