Yay so I'm buying my friends Citi golf (I know I know :)) ...

It's a 1990 model.

There are two spots of rust on it by both windscreens, and the mechanic that looked at it said we should definitely sort those out. We took it to the rust people and they quoted us around R3000 to take both windscreens out and fix the rust.

They also said we should get a rustproofing...

What are your views?

Rust is a real devil...you will never have that car back to its original rust free state even if its been rust proofed!! What you paying for the car?

Oh well... But do you think for R9k it is a good buy? The mechanic chap said the engine was in good condition, it just needs a service. The paintwork is in very good condition as well (besides the rust).

That is less than I paid for my rust bucket Fazda with 205000 on the clock!!

I had my rust all cut out last year November, and it is slowly working its way back, despite being looked after...as Norm said, it's like cancer, unfortunately...you will be very lucky to get rid of it...that aside, it is worth the money!

What's a fazda, anyway?

When Ford and Mazda joined forces a few years back, somewhere in their corporate wisdom they decided to go along the road of badge engineering.

The result in my case, was a Mazda 323 which was called a Ford Tracer. Now the only "Ford" on my car is to found in the badges on the grille, hooter button and boot lid. My search for ultimate truth has forced me to never call my car a Ford...but the 'books" say it is not a Mazda either, so I have ended up with a Fazda...I know what I am driving and everybody else is confused!! :D

Considering that he's in Durban, he's going to struggle to find a not-so-new car without rust.

Agreed on that count, and VW is probably the best bet...Opels down here rust whilst you are looking at them, and Mazda/Ford are almost as bad...only other possibility would be a Toyota, but they also have windscreen edge rust problems.

115,000 kms on a 19 year old car??!!??!

That means it has been used to do nothing but short trips of less than 5km. Engines don't really like that. Wears them out quicker.

All cars in Durban are full of rust.
Go for that bargain car and throw it away after a while.
Cars are not to be owned forever but to be replaced after a while.

Not necessarily...My Wolseley is 42 years old and has done 67000 km and is magnificent on the mechanical side...as long as a car is correctly maintained, there is nothing wrong with doing a low mileage...and no I don't do trips of 5km at a time...once she starts up she does a minimum of 30 km...she's a great deal healthier than some cars that have done a third of that mileage and are 40 years younger!!
