I will probably be taking the plunge a.g getting dstv in the coming few weeks. I'm seriously considering an HD PVR decoder. These genetic come without a dish. From the look of things the cheapest option is to fork out a few hundred. Bucks for a standard decoder which cones with a dish a.d installation voucher and then get the HD unit. What pitfalls am I creating for myself?

I also just took the plunge. They just gave me the decoder so far. I phoned the installer and he will be installing tomorrow. I thought about installing it myself, but I guess the dish just comes with the installer.

The installer came out today and did the installation for free. When I asked him how much to do the installation for the PVR he quoted me a price that was higher than the R550 I bought the combo for, so it looks like the cheapest way. You can probably then get extra view to. Don't know if the decoder allows it though (Your primary decoder being the PVR one).

Just one problem, the LNB on the dish will be a single view LNB. For Xtra view, you need a twin LNB which is a lot more expensive. Also if you want to use the second channel record on the PVR 2P you need a twin LNB. It may actually have been cheaper just to get a dish and twin LNB because you've had to pay for another decoder and now you will have to pay for a new LNB. Also if you are not going to do the Xtra view set up yourself, someone is going to charge you for it. Try to do it yourself, it's not to difficult. If you get stuck I'll try to help you. Also you can find install guides on the net. If you do the install yourself, when you change the LNB, just make sure the LNB angle is the same as the other LNB on the dish or you are going to pick up a problem.

Check if your single view decoder is an 1131, this is the latest. It's very small. If it is, then Xtra view will work fine with the PVR. From 1110 up, Xtra view is fine.

P.S. Oh' yeah, if you want to use the record on second channel on the PVR, and do xtra view to the SD decoder as well, you will need a signal splitter as well or a different LNB called a quad or a twin LNB 2x4. More cash.

Thanks for all that info man.

I saw this thread

Didn't want to resurrect it, but it is still fairly fresh.

The guy wanted to charge me R1200 for the extra view installation, which I think is a bit high. Think I will give it a go on my own now. I thought I had to give them the installer details when I activated extra view after the installation? Do I have to or not?

No need to give installer details. That image is for two 1110 decoders, it will work, just remember you need another cable running to the PVR for second channel record. Actually that price is pretty reasonable. I charge 1800 for someone in your situation. The thing is the extra parts that you need are expensive. The twin LNB on it's own is around R550.

No, mine is for two 1131 decoders. Is the heart-beat cable special, or is just a normal cable with 2 F connectors? I see what you mean on the extra parts.

Ah, two 1131 decoders. exactly the same set up as on that image. All you need is a twin LNB and cable. Don't worry, coax is fine for the heart beat.
