What is the procedure usually followed when emmigrating, career wise?

I assume most people get jobs, or many interviews lined up atleast before going over. I hear that others go over on holiday visas, then exit and reapply for a work visa? Sounds expensive, and therefore kind of risky unless you have that much money to throw around.

If you cast a wide net, did you redesign your c.v. for different countries in their style? Did you just post on all the "local" C.V. sites for that country and mark yourself as a foreigner?

Did you go through immigration specialists?

Did you have a work visa before you did any of this?

Did you ask your employer for a referral letter before you left? Or did you wait until you had a job/prospects and then resign? If I do that I don't think I will have a reference.

I am in the unfortunate position to have very little tertiary education behind my name. I only have a "diploma", and a few other semi useless certs. I do have 6-7 yrs under my belt now, but most of those are with one company, the one I work for, so references would be difficult. I have a weird mix of technologies, no real technical specialty, industry and concept is consistant I suppose. I'm adaptable, that's about it really, that's my selling point, which I think has it's place in IT, being such a fast paced industry. I need to earn enough to afford to send my family money to live on. I can do that now in Rands, I'm not sure how that will translate with overseas currency and living expenses if my job title takes a downgrade. I spend very little money on luxuries.

I have a British passport.

I will be putting my c.v. on sites in the UK and Ireland, being a British citizen is nice in that scenario. Is there really any point in trying NZ or OZ? Without a degree, or major speciality would I even get past the checks if an employer is interested?

I kinda need this to work. I just really can't stay here doing what I'm doing, sometimes people just need to skip the country and start their life over. I have some family who depend on me financially, that is the major worry that has thus far stopped me in my tracks.

I think this is a great time to be in SA to be honest. The number of people coming over to live here is staggering. We just recently had a Belgian guy and French girl join our company. An American girl I met recently married to an SA guy moved back to Joburg because they couldn't find work in LA and found it easy as pie here. I know a whole bunch of other foreign students who are studying here as well.

It's obviously your call but Europe is not doing that great economically right now. If I were you I would make sure to secure another job, if at all possible, before you go.

Me, I'm transitioning into another field of IT all together and it's hard f%&$ing work and won't provide any reward for at least a year or two. Qualifications are useless if you ask me, industry experience is what counts, so I wouldn't worry about that.

edit: oh and you don't have to worry about work visa's since you have a British passport. I worked in UK for 2 1/2 years on my Italian passport, no troubles.

Hi.

I was lucky and got a company to sponsor my work visa to oz. This company regularly recruits software developers from SA, and I got in touch with them through a friend.

Anyway, your best bet is to find a company willing to sponsor you. If not, it gets difficult: you'll need to get a holiday visa, come over, and look for a job...

I won't lie: its very expensive coming over. Think airplane tickets, furniture shipping, and living expenses for that first month untill you get paid in their currency.

I'm not sure what skills you have, but here is an oppertunity I saw:

Pm me your skills, and if you fit the bill, i'll help you get in touch with our account managers.

When I left SA for the UK, I never had a job to go to. It was pointless applying for jobs because they wouldnt even look further at my cv as I didn't have clearance to work.

I got a visa on the Highly Skilled Migrant Program(doesnt exist anymore). Within 3 weeks I had a job.

My SA employer gave me a great letter of recommendation, however, I discovered no employer looks at it. They rather you give them the name and number and they will contact the SA employers. I guess they don't trust these letters. I would ask for the letter anyway.

I'm in IT in the UK. Sadly without a degree it will be difficult to get a job earning more than £33k a year.

Also highly interested in this. Had the feeling for quite some time now that I should bail (personal reasons, not political etc.) Just don't know where to start. Will be watching this thread closely.

@LithIX: What is the living costs in Aus like compared to SA, renting, food, transport etc.?

EDIT: I am a software engineer, C# with 5 years experience and a masters degree in CIS, if that helps in pointing me in the right direction.

Not necessarily - you need the right skill though - I was on £85k per year excl bonus.

Putting your CV on the net is a start - I can promise you that every interested contact will ask you "when are you available for an interview". Its highly unlikely that you'll be able to organize a job from here - again unless you're in a niche skill and have right contacts. Another problem I found with the UK is that most work is available immediately - so they want someone now, not in 3 months time when you're done with your housekeeping.

Luckily for you, you have the passport. Last time I heard the UK is closed non-UK and EU people work wise - the highly skilled visa program and sponsored work permits doesn't exist anymore. There is extreme special cases but required lots of motivation.
For Aus and NZ you'll need sponsorship, or apply for the skilled migrant visa which takes months and lots of $$$ - NZ is a bit easier though.

Did you ask your employer for a referral letter before you left? Or did you wait until you had a job/prospects and then resign? If I do that I don't think I will have a reference.

Critical to get the reference letter. Make sure it states your designation, start and end date, bonus if you can have a small paragraph summarizing your job responsibility. Ask them for two or three original signed copies, with company letter head. If you ever apply for a work permit/visa for another country (like OZ) you will need this. Its always good to keep this for future - its like your birth certificate - a day will come when you're going to need it (and you do for OZ visa btw)

No one else offering some tips? Like countries to look at? Visa procedures/Living Costs/Jobs Available. Really want to try this, but using some of these sites that offer overseas jobs just feels like I am opening myself up for a scam.

It's getting harder, next to impossible to get into first world economies. Your best bet is to wait for these economies to turn around. They tend to relax their immigration rules when demand for skills starts to outstrip supply.

I wouldn't trust these sites either.

Too much emphasis is put on degrees. In my experience they are not a predictor of ability or performance. Obviously they're specifically necessary for particular fields. In general information technology is not one of those fields.
