getting a kitten, what costs can i expect apart from the cost of the cat itself ? also what's about the average of feeding/up-keeping the cat pm ?
 
Kitten. Not much.

A cat will chow about R100-200 of cat food a month, but I'm guessing. The costs start if the cat gets sick. Vets are expensive. It'll also need vaccinations etc.

Hell I know people who feed their cats dog food & it appears to be working OK.

These people are not smart. Cats and dogs have quite divergent dietary requirements - they might snack on each other's food, but this cannot possibly be good in the long term.

And a +1 on the R200 or so p/m on cat food, and that's for fairly (supposedly) decent stuff. Our cat is bloody finicky and refuses to eat anything but some larny fussy-cat food you can only get at vets and specialist pet shops.

Not sure about kitty medical aid, but mine need cat-shrinks. They behave anything like cats should.

Fickle creatures and run anytime anyone sneezes, walks anywhwere near them or, for that matter, anytime anyone just breathes in their nearby viccinity.

They don't cuddle, want to be picked up or be stroked. They don't want people. They only eat their cubes and very infrequently they might eat a sachet of Whiskers. Biltong, chicken and fish are all 101% safe around them... so too are birds, mice and all manner of creepy crawlies.

When they snuff it, I am will be getting a Siamese cat in the vain hope it behaves a wee bit more like a cat.
 
Also keep it mind where the cat is going to go do it's business... Outside in the Garden, or litter box.

Litter box costs money as well if you buy Kitty litter, last time i checked think its goes for about R50 a bag which should last you the month
 
Just the cost of your soul...solitary, watching, spying, passing on details to their mother ship, you've been warned :eek:

I have three cats never had them been in a fight yet. but then again i do not let them run around in the neighbours yards

I cannot agree with this more, both my cats are on Hills and I have never looked back. All the other cheap brands of food are mostly just maize meal and rubbish. If you really and truly want a happy and healthy cat then seriously consider proper cats food.

I know it is not cheap, but I look at it as if I am investing in my cats future, and that makes me smile in that I know she will grow big, strong and healthy ;)

rofl... if you think that commercial cat and dog food is what they were designed to eat... well i give up.

The Month???

Sheesh, cats can sheet a lot more than that, a bag would last a week in my household!
 
For the silicon type, a bag a month sounds about right. I use two bags, but have two cats.

Careful what you wish for, my Siamese cross never leaves my side when I'm home, demands my lap whenever I sit :)
 
Siamese is the closet thing to a being a dog without crossing the line :)

Come to think of it, I recall friend's who had a Siamese, 21 y.o., who loved to sit on the shoulder. If a helping hand wasn't there to get up there, the fella would take matters into his own hands and climb up there. Didn't give a rat's ass as to how it got there, just so long as it got there. Wasn't too purturbed about skin and flesh of the unfortunate host :D
 
our kitten(s) always cost about R15 - R30, depending on where we bought them. They hardly get(got?) sick, so no medical aid or hardly any vet bills. Got them nurtured for about R200-odd, and we probably spend about R40 for a pack of food which lasts about 3 - 5 months, depending on the season (i.e. if there's rats around they hunt, etc). It's a very easy & cheap pet to have :) We probably spend more money on cleaning after them than up-keeping them. The one cat if rather hairy, so we ended up buying extra linen to put over all the chairs and spend a lot of money on those linen cleaning rolls - get them from a R5-store, it's cheaper than @ Woolworths / Pick `n Pay.

Dogs tend to cost more though.....
