Sup guys!

I'm getting my new hardware sometime within the next 2 weeks, maybe even this week- I just need some advice to make sure everything is cool :D

This is the stuff I'm planning to get:

AMD 965 PHENOM 2 BLACK EDITION
ASUS CROSSHAIR IV FORMULA MOTHERBOARD
COOLERMASTER HAF-922 CHASSIS
COOLERMASTER CPU COOLER V8
6 x 2GB DDR3

It's probably going to cost me about R8000. I still have my 5850 BE but I'm probably going to get another one to use for Crossfire next month.

Is this an alright setup, everything compatible, good price etc?

Everything looks good, dont have much time now but would double check if the V8 will fit in the 922. Also, the Phenoms run dual channel memory with 4 slots max. So you'll have to dial down the RAM to 4x2gb (or 4x4gb, but thats super expensive). Although... for gaming you can save some money and only get 2x2gb, no game (that doesnt have memory leaks) will use up 4gb.

Yeah cool, I think 2 x 2 GB will suffice, especially if it's dual channel. No use getting 6, 8 or 12 then lol (maybe at a later stage). Shot! I'm sure the V8 will fit in there, it's a pretty big chassis, I had a look at it in the shop already.

The 1090T is only around a grand more expensive than the 965 so the money you saved from the ram will cover it.

Do you know how much it costs? And if the retailers even have it yet :wtf: To be honest I won't mind, if it's not tooo expensive.

LoL, R3k. :D

COOLERMASTER CPU COOLER V8 performs fairly poorly considering the price.

HYPER 212+ or COGAGE TRUE SPIRIT is what you want, half the price and both perform better.

+1, have a true spirit myself and I love it.

I read about that True Spirit bad boy in the NAG magazine. Would that work on this particular chipset? Sorry been out of the PC Hardware game for a while, I'm actually quite clueless about the new stuff :D

Well, technically I would only be saving round about R500 on the RAM, but there's nothing wrong with paying a bit extra now for future-proofing :D

EDIT: BTW- Do the 1090Ts also run dual channel memory?

What do you mean would it work on that chipset?

Ok thanks, as I've said- a bit behind with all of this. Last thing I want to do is get a cooler that doesn't fit and then I sit there with a finger up my @rse after building it, realizing I don't have a CPU cooler :D

The cpu will come with a cooler.

Whats this nonsense about the V8 performing poorly? My load temps are a max of 18-20° above ambient (full load Intelburntest). I tried to OC my chip as well to 3.8ghz, and temps still maxed out at 23° above ambient. Thats with the fan turned on medium. Not that I'm against the Hyper 212 (except that it is not in stock anywhere, at least nowhere that I have looked).

Yeah, I have build a couple of pcs with the cocage true spirit, non of them AMD though, and it worked on all of them without problems.

I think they mean, for the amount you pay for it.

Coolers not fitting on boards is a somewhat rare occurrence, sometimes when the fan is attached on larger coolers they might encroach on the ram area, but usually moving ram to secondary slots solves that problem.

The True Spirit is a fairly slim heatsink, perfect for low rpm push-pull, or just leave the pwm fan on.
