Breakins have us fearing for the few possession we have at night/ when we are not home..

Looking at getting a small, cheap safe from Game/Makro or wherever.

Do these cheap electronic jobbies actually work? On an episode of The Real Hustle, the team managed to crack a cheap hotel room safe in like under a minute...:o

And how does one secure them in place so that the entire thing cannot just be stolen, to be opened at a later date? :o

Thanks

Mine is hidden away in the bottom corner of the closet secured on three sides (to the walls and floor) with hefty rawl-bolts.

In the same closet I've got a more visible safe that's empty.

Ah, cunning...

And these rawl bolts - you put them in yourself? Like do the safes have holes for mounting/securing?

Edit: http://www.makro.co.za/ProductDetail.aspx?cat=-1&prod=33321&SKU=000000000000093792|EA This has 'fixing bolts included'
iirc they had the bottom and back holes and I drilled out the side ones. I wasnt too impressed by the bolts included with mine so I used my own. Coach screw and plugs will work well too if you're looking for a slightly cheaper alternative.

Cool beans. Seems like a worthwhile investment...

Very clever :)

@hj2k_x - I prefer the key variety, not the electronic ones - don't think you want to remember a 5 digit code when you are under duress! my 2 cents

Hmmm, what kind of duress?

I just want to put valuables and maybe passports in there. Am hoping not to have a gun to my head at any point....

The digital ones have a key for events like flat battery or "times of duress". Note not to use the key all the time, they wear out!

Interesting. My preference would also be the oldskool key method. Gonna have a look around to see what I can find...

Well we had a break in over a week ago...my dad was home at the time...anyway long story short the first thing they asked was where is the safe? At first my dad said there isn't a safe but because the guys were agitated and extremely aggressive (they also started trashing the place) he just showed them where it was...and well they took everything!

So to get a safe or not...does it really matter at the end of the day?

Get two.

One dummy with old passprots etc and about R500 to placate the fsckers.

Then another one hidden somewhere random with the real valuables/guns.

Sort of what I suggested in the second post?

well I guess thats something to think about...not that we have any valuables anymore...but who knows maybe in the future :p

oh they took both sets of passports in any case...what they will be doing with them is anyone's guess...

Got one...The bolts supplied with it are a mystery to me :o

About 8cm long. With a metal sheath, a bolt at the top that screws off and at the bottom, where I'd expect some form of screw or tapering, just a widening...

What on earth do I do with these?

You drill a hole just big enough for the sleeve - width and depth. The nut gets fastened from the inside of the safe. As it tightens the tapering pulls up through the sleeve causing it to expand against the side of the hole you drilled.

erm, but the bottom on the thing has a knob which is wider than the sleeve ant the rest of the bolt...

Make sure you drill a hole wide enough to accommodate that then.
