Getting a SIM cut...

Hi

So I got a new phone as a present, and of course it wants a SIM that is slightly smaller than the one I have.

So I trundle off to local Vodacom shop and ask them to trim it to size. They want R160 to do that... else I must buy a new SIM and do a number port for R60. I was expecting this trimming to be free, I think it was in the past.

I'm not happy with this daylight robbery and am now seriously considering returning "the finger" to them by switching to a different network.

Any suggestions? (preferably one that does not expire your data so mercilessly). Or can I trim the SIM myself?

Thanks, Ian

i bought a sim cutter on takealot for under R200, everyone at work now uses it

Vodacom are really just a bunch of crooks. Change to Telkom.

this is the exact i have, been used for last 3yrs

I have cut a SIM in the past without a special tool. There are guides on the net showing how much to trim off. It is not hard to do. Start off slightly bigger so that you can trim it to fit snugly in the phone. Use a carpet knife or scissors.

Also got the same one as the new laptops all require the smaller sim.
Have done a few for the staff and friends.

If you are in CPT you are welcome to swing by (i'm in Pinelands) and use it for free :-)

You can trim the SIM yourself, if you're careful. You can buy a R0.99 SIM card from PnP and use it as a template...

Use a pair of scissors.

If you cock it up go get a new SIM.

If you don't, win win.

If you are really super scared of cutting use a nail file. It just takes much longer.

Hi guys

Thanks for all the (prompt) feedback. I see youtube has some videos on the topic. Have printed out the template.
I was just worried that the electronics part on the smaller SIMs would also be smaller... but seems that's all the same, they're just getting rid of more and more plastic.

Will give it a go shortly ;-)

Thanks, Ian

Test with a throwaway sim first. I got one at pep and used that as a template. Cut it roughly, then use a file to make it fit into the sim adaptor. My first one was a screwup - the scissors did not like the metal part.. so I used the file for that part the second try. Then did my Vodacom sim without a problem.

Also bought cutter on takealot a week later.

Have cut my own for various phones from a pdf template I downloaded. Just be slow and careful, cut straight and then use a 200 grit sandpaper to fine-tune the size of the sides. I've never had a problem and never got it wrong... so far(!). How hard can it be? ;-)

My current SIM is old-style with the large chip/contact area. The newer ones have less gold/whatever. So have to go carefully because the alignments are different.

Paki cell shop did for me for free.
:-) Yeah was considering that but were none in Tygervalley. Think I first need to get a disposable nano-sim to get right alignment since my silicon is way different to the mini/micro layouts.

I used a scissors and 5 minutes of patience. Templates if needed, you can google, you can youtube. Its very easy to do

Try popping in at Gadget time in Tygervalley. They are normally helpful.
