I'm getting one because its a good deal and I've seen my friends' lives simplified with this thing (lies:twisted:)

Anyway - what is it all about?

I'm hearing I should get an iTunes account and not a South African account because the US account has more apps?
I'm hearing jailbreak it so that you can get free apps?
What 3G should I get for it? I have a 4G 3G for my laptop and don't really use it all, but with the iPad i'm thinking I'll be on the net most of the time that I'm using the iPad...do I just insert the sim into the thing?
I know my wife will love it, but I must still convince her, how can I do this, any good magazines for woman on the iPad, maybe an app?
I know about tapatalk as I'm on forums all day long...how good is it on the iPad 2?

I'm subscribing to that iPad 2 tips and tricks thread...but any advice and answers to my questions will be appreciated, thanks.

Not to be pedantic now but perhaps you should change the title of your post from 'nothing' to 'anything' as saying you don't know nothing means you actually know something.

A US Account has more of everything so yes, its better to get a US account. You will need to buy vouchers to load onto your account though in order to purchase apps, music or anything else.

Yes you can get free apps through installous but this is piracy.
As far as I know, but I stand under correction, it is still not possible to jailbreak the iPad 2 due to its new processor.

You have a 4G 3G sim? That makes absolutely no sense.
If you have a sim, you insert it and then insert the correct APN.
MTN: myMTN
Voda: iphone.vodacom.za

You can buy magazine subscriptions or download the kindle app and download books from Amazon. Some are free and the ones you pay for can range from as little as $0.99 to $12.99 so its still not expensive to buy books.

I hope that helps you a bit.

Search the internet on how to create an USA iTunes account. Much better than a SA account.

A Kenya account is not too bad either - I think you get most the apps, but you'll lack the movies and books. The thing I like about it is the ability to simply use my credit card to buy per app (like a BB). The US account needs to have vouchers etc

I'm also not 100% on Jailbreaking, but I hear you can Jailbreak the iPad 2 iOS4.x - but not iOS5 as yet. I wouldn't do it for the free apps though - rather the ability to get past a few dumb limitations

I also don't get the 4G 3G :/ But keep in mind you are limited to 20MB over 3G via the App Store. If you're awaiting a client and browse the store, bear in mind you can't get anything more than 20MB - about half the apps available. Same with the updates .... you'll need to wait until you're home. On the 3G issue - you won't get the SMS to let you know how far you are either, as the iPad cannot read these. 3G is probably one of the worst aspects of the iPad - but I hear it's the governments fault or the FBI or something ....

Newstand is available on iOS5 and I've bought a few subscriptions. Each issue is around 200-400MB in size and there are bugs with the downloading still. I used 1.3GB of data on one issue magazine ... and another I couldn't read until 2 nights ago due to an error as well. I've never used the Kindle app to read magazines - but it can only be better than Apples (for now)

For kids - it's awesome ... browsing is fantastic ... screen crystal clear and battery life is great!

Getting an US iTunes account is better than an SA iTunes Account. But it isn't that important, and can be a hassel.
Definitely don't bother jailbreaking it. It has lead to problems everytime I did. And I always end up restoring it.
There are loads of magazines available in Newsstand, the newspaper/magazine app. Vogue, etc

Remember that you can actually do more with a netbook than an Ipad. Compare the 2 in google and you will be astonished.
And the netbook is much cheaper. But you will definitely loose friends.... hehe

Thanks for the replies.

4G 3G. I meant, I have a 3G that is limited to 4gigs lol...

Please suggest a better data bundle as I'll be downloading my ass off.

Haven't used my netbook since I got an iPad. Hell, barely used my netbook even before I got my iPad.

Remember the 20mb limit on 3G so dunno how much downloading your arse off you will be doing.

Get a US account and buy vouchers.

As for jailbreak, you can't on iPad 2 unless on a specific version as far as I know.

Also remember you need a micro sim or need to cut your regular sim.

@IveDreama why iPhone.vodacom.za, not just Internet like normal?

so this 20 mb limit is only when I am in the physical appstore? so If I download the national geographic app and download the magazine through there I wont have a problem? and Zinio should be fine?

I use my iPad more than my laptop these days...much easier when on the road. I cut a normal sim down with scissors to make it fit...piece of cake.

No - I'm pretty sure I've downloaded that magazines from 3G .. it's only the proper app store.

When you get the magazines though, make sure you're not on 3G and have an unlimited account. My first magazine (400MB) took 1.3GB of data as it never remembers where I was nor started where I ended. My 2nd magazine worked alright - and my 3rd I have even got yet as I'm running out of 3G and I don't know how much it'll take ...

You don't think they'll be bias? ;)

The iPad takes a micro-SIM, actually. Google "sim cutter": I've seen them advertised for R200. Or you can download a template and use an Stanley knife.
Depending on your service provider they might actually give you one. ;)

The big advantage of this is you can always pop it back into the cut-away and use it in other devices.
