Getting an iPad2 soon...don't know NOTHING about these things.

If you only have 3G - you'll never be able to download an application of more than 20MB.

Unless you get a microSIM adapter, take out the SIM and put it in your PC to download - then use iTunes to sync it. Also keep in mind that it can't send/receive SMS, so to prevent you going out of bundle - you'll need to logon to Vodacom (when it works) or phone the call centre every few days. You won't get the SMS warning you

This is one of my gripes with the iPad - it's good, but it can so much better with a little less Steve built into it. Removing the 3G limit and allowing SMSs to be received would already make it much better.

I don't want to work around every issue either by buying wifi routers and adapters or jailbreaking/hacking. I'd like it to just work - like everyone has told me for many years, which is inaccurate.

tx Dolby... not really concerned about apps yet, will be used for zinio, kindle, facetime and email in the beginning. my mom is new to computers, so baby steps. I can always take my laptop with if needed. I've got the login details for checking data usage (cell c), so i'll just have to frequently check and load her more data when needed.
