My old PC of about 4 years died on me the other night - I think it was a PSU issue as there was NO power ... NO fans ... nothing. Instead of fiddling I took the chance to upgrade and bought a new PC today.

I unplugged my old HDD from the old PC and plugged it into the new as a slave so I could simply copy across. The new PC recognised the drive and I thought all was OK.

But - in the directory where my files are saved (d:/users/COMPUTER NAME) when I click it says I don't have access and click 'continue' for permanent access. I do that and the bar at the top moves slowly and nothing happens ... it won't let me in that folder!

It seems all the other folders are alright ... but the files I need are in the users folder.

Any idea?

Windows 7 64 bit installed

That's one way...

Another way is to unplug it from you PC and place it in an external USB bracket or hdd USB dock and copy it over from there.

That link isn't loading :/

But I tried Xplorer2 and it does the same thing ; won't let me access that folder.

What's the difference between a bracket/USB and plugging it in via the SATA cable?

The problem is the access rights on the folder is restricting your from opening that folder. You probably had a password for the account and the keep your files private option enabled. You have to reassign ownership of the folder to an adminstrator account on your current PC.

It worked - awesome!

Thanks guys!

Changing ownership ...

I don't have a docking station or anything on hand and needed it done tonight :)
