The demand for linux skills has always been there, it's just being publicly voiced now, instead of hidden away in a dark dingy corner of a server room at your local ISP.
Internationally recognized training is the way to go and I hope that the local companies really start benefitting from more awareness of this.

Actually using Linux day-to-day also helps.

I'd switch over to linux on my main machines in a heartbeat if I can only get adobe photoshop, and flash on there...and it should be running natively, not through wine (crap)

The ad should rather be, want to earn double or triple your salary, learn linux.

Like training for everything, the best resources are Google and a positive attitude. I learnt Linux simply by grabbing some CDs and spending a few days lost in the alienage. I think the biggest barrier to entry is simply understanding how the filesystem is structured. Once you can comfortably find things, everything else comes quickly.

Open Source is not confined to Linux

Getting Linux training

With the South African government pushing the use of open source software and businesses realising the benefits of open source, the demand for IT staff with Linux skills is growing..

I know this article has more of a Linux Operating System slant, but open source software is not confined to Linux. There are hundreds of open source applications for Windows too. As a software developer our technologies we use are mostly from the open source world. Some of the software is unrivaled from the comerical world. Tools like Subversion (Source Control), nHibernate (database access ported from java), nAnt (software build tool ported from java) are some of the best known multi-platform tools. Everyone knows MSN, Paint and Winzip, but few windows users know Pidgin, Gimp, 7zip as free superior alternatives to the aforementioned respectively.

My daily tools in Windows that are opensource which I find indespesable are Programmers Notepad, Free Download Manager, InfraRecorder, DVDFlick, Sharpdevelop and many more.

These are ALL opensource apps for windows. 99% of them can be found at http://www.sourceforge.net . Another good open source site where Microsoft has been publishing some of their tools and applications is http://www.codeplex.net. Google also has its own repository at http://code.google.com

Just thought I would add another perspective to Open Source and that its not confined to Linux and differnt flavours of operating systems under it.

Having said that, I like believe that world will one day be ruled by Linux and Android. ;-)

OS WTF!

A dream come true :)

It would be interesting to see how many of our members have any Linux certs, and how much experience using the OS they have.

I have an L+, this really got me hooked on working with Linux.
Last year I completed my LPIC1, which I really enjoyed.
Been using Linux for over 2 years now.

I believe this article is written in anticipation of where Linux will be in the future. As are most of the articles concerning the progress of open source software today.
Currently, the demand for Linux skills is not high at all, unless you have been working with Linux for a good couple of years.
I am speaking from the mouth of someone who has recently completed 3 Linux training courses and written both international LPI exams, but cant find any entry into the Linux employment environment in JHB.
IMHO... if you considering getting training in Linux to further your career, hold on for this year to see whether the hype surrounding the Open Source market will in fact materialize.

I still use Total Commander until this day, can do everything... best feature is the Copy queuing, especially handy during "bring your drive to my house" days....

yeah I do! I tried TotalCommander, but then settled on FreeCommander. Quite frankly I don't see how people can waste time on Windows Expoler. Its such a mission to do anything. Way too many clicks.

love it!! but its for windows....

There are plenty of alternatives out there.

Midnight Commander is pretty cool even if it text-based.

GNOME commander, Krusader. The list goes on.

I also find KDiff3 quite handy as a sort of GUI-based diff command.
