Just by looking at my own kids I believe that I would have spent far more time gaming if I was a youngster today.
Even at work we did not have PC's yet (when I was 24), but 'dumb' terminals with 14" green screens!!

But, yeah, still gaming - FPS only. Currently CoD:MW2 and soon Black Ops.

So, older than 45 and younger than 48, so either 46 or 47?
I can't get into the FPS genre. I mean, I don't MIND it, it's just that by their definition they're all shooty-bang-bang and no substance. They bring a lot of innovation to the industry in regard to mechanics but as far as story goes... omfg kill me now...

I use gaming as stress relief - mindless, point 'n shoot and make big explosions and kill as many folks as you can! Play for an hour and then walk away...

See, as far as competitive FPS goes... I think it's awesome... for the first two or three maybe even four rounds... Then it's like, "Haven't we done all this before?"
Even in strategy games like StarCraft 2, the first 5 minutes dictates the course of the game. It's like rock-paper-scissors. If your opponent pulls a rock manoeuvre to your anticipation of paper, you're over
Sometimes you can just scrape by and maybe the tables will turn, but usually they don't. I find that a lot more interesting than most FPSs... That tends to just boil down to who lags more/less and who knows the map better
The thing is that while you use gaming as stress relief, I use it as escapism. I love story, I love immersing myself in another world. It's why I also love reading. Give me the best parts of both in an RPG and I'm as happy as a pig in ****
I used to play a lot of FFA and singleplayer games. I then found the social part was more addictive. I now play in the Do Gaming leagues with my clan in BC2 and its great fun. Its rewarding to feel your team improving. The every now and then you have a practice lan, and get completely wasted instead

Considering firing up Neverwinter Nights. Never finished it. Might bring back some gaming enjoyment, was really into rpg's until I discovered WoW.
Anyone remember Frakk and Chukie Egg on the BBC Micro? Monty's Revenge, original Prince of Persia, sadly my gaming only really started in the early 90s on the PC, I missed out on the C64 and Spectrum days, never had access to that tech back then.

Only one ringing a bell is Monty's Revenge. My gaming days only began in the 90's as well. 1991, to be precise. Prince of Persia... I still have nightmares about being chopped in half by those damn serrated traps
Well the point of a game is, well, to game? That's like complaining chess has a dull story line. "Oh how typical, the Knight took out a Pawn, gee that never happens!"
If you really want a game with a story then play old text adventure games, Zork etc; or the Sierra series quest games, but for me personally I don't care about the story in most games.. I've found that some games try to have epic story lines, like Gothic 4 but fail so bad when it comes to delivery, Fallout 3 had a nice story - kinda but was so terrible with voice acting and characters that I got very bored after a while. Mass Effect 1+2 was great but wasn't the most interesting game - gameplay wise.
You do get some FPS games with good stories, Deus Ex, System Shock, Bioshock had a fscking amazing story, Oblivion was okay, Fallout 3 had a good story but like I said above, terribly executed.
Anyway the point of games really is to game, I like stories in games but only really care unless they convince me to bother
Okay and obviously I left out Half Life 2, was probably one of the best story driven linear shooters ever, and a prime example of HOW to do it.
Metro 2033 also had a compelling environment and story, but the game didn't really hold much replay value for me. It's like what Stalker would have been if it was pushed out by EA / some big company, more polished, but dull in gameplay.
