Getting old.

Well the point of a game is, well, to game? That's like complaining chess has a dull story line. "Oh how typical, the Knight took out a Pawn, gee that never happens!" ;)
Ah, but chess relies on outwitting your opponent. 'tis much more involved than bouncing around frantically clicking like a mofo and hoping for the best :D

If you really want a game with a story then play old text adventure games, Zork etc; or the Sierra series quest games, but for me personally I don't care about the story in most games.. I've found that some games try to have epic story lines, like Gothic 4 but fail so bad when it comes to delivery, Fallout 3 had a nice story - kinda but was so terrible with voice acting and characters that I got very bored after a while. Mass Effect 1+2 was great but wasn't the most interesting game - gameplay wise.

Hardly. Adventure games are the best place to find stories if that is what purely drives you. As I've said, RPGs are where my heart is at. I love a mix of action, of determining an outcome, of having the weight of decision upon your shoulders. The Sierra quest series games were all too short and some lost their charm as they aged.

You do get some FPS games with good stories, Deus Ex, System Shock, Bioshock had a fscking amazing story, Oblivion was okay, Fallout 3 had a good story but like I said above, terribly executed.

And I own Deus Ex and BioShock :) Will get my hands on System Shock one day. Oblivion was hardly "okay." It was ghastly. Fallout 3 was a modest improvement on Oblivion :p

Anyway the point of games really is to game, I like stories in games but only really care unless they convince me to bother :)

Like you would say, the gameplay plays just as much a part as the story. It was you who said something along those lines, wasn't it? Regardless, I agree--the point of games is to game but to me, a game is firstly about story, then about immersion (gameplay, depth, believability). I will happily play a clunky game if the story manages to hook me. Just as easily I will drop a game with an interesting story if the gameplay is horribly implemented. Different games appeal to different people.

I, for one, don't get the point of sports games :p But hey, there's a market for it. That market's just not me :D

Personally story is the number factor for me when it comes to gaming. If the story is good I can overlook poor game play, if the story is poor no amount of good gameplay can save it for me.

I feel your pain copa, I used to game so much last year, but now its like taken a back seat, unless a game grabs me by the balls and doesn't let go till I have finished it, I will almost never play it, got other things to do like surf the web and paint (shocking i know....)

on that note I should really finish Mass Effect....

I am sadly also falling into the old category. I have a massive stack of games at home that I want to get through, but I can only focus on Dragon Age and Mass Effect these days. Most of these games were bought and collected when I didn't have a computer. Trying to play them now will be really hard, due to the old graphics. Added to the fact that I don't have all day to play anymore, and it sort of adds up. Sigh

We laugh now at our mothers playing soduko, hearts, etc for hours - but I wonder what the old people, aka us, will be playing in the years to come.

I'm slowly getting old, but still love to play FPS like a little kid (my wife doesnt understand this).

I mean will it be silly to go online when I'm 60 - and engage in battle tactics and laugh when I teamkill a clanny due to my arthritis acting up? or will this be normal?

I sort of look forward to this in a morbid, self-deprecating way...

I'm only 29 and I'm not bored of gaming, I also pretty much play everything and anything, it's a curse that I inherited from living through the 80's and seeing games progress rapidly that I love pretty much all genre's and cannot stick to one. First time playing Star Control II in Standard 3 was wow, I remember faking being sick so I could finish it. Recently finished it again ;-) sigh good times.

Only 24 now, but I remember when I was around 14 I could hardly stop myself from playing a game. I would come home from school and play until I had to go sleep. On my PS1 I rented games in the morning, and played them nonstop until I had to return them by 11am the next day. Most of the time I had only toilet breaks and couldn't even eat while away from the couch/PC.

Now? It takes that special game to even sit for more than an hour, games like Fallout 3, Mass Effect and Batman Arkham Asylum. In other words, the game has to be really awesome far beyond "good".

Multiplayer is a different story though. BF2 kept me busy for over 2000 hours and there is no storyline in MP. :P So at the end of the day its all about gameplay, it's a game afterall, not a film.
