Don't get discouraged if you find the game a bit overwhelming initially.

If you've got any buddies who play get some advice from that.

Play what you enjoy and don't let anyone tell you to play something different.
I suggest reading what each class does and what kind of role you can expect to fill in a group with that class so you have an idea of what people will ask of you.

Once you've picked a class it's a lot easier to give you some "do x to get y" advice.

I do agree there. The game is very overwhelming at first. You get used to the game after some time playing it and it get addictive Which I like...not like other games that become boring.

Best help will be from friends. I had to start off without friends to help me Not that hard, but using www.thottbot.com helps a lot with those quests
