I am terrible at DIY but even I would not leave wiring for a high-draw appliance looking like that.
Main culprits here are either element (quick fix) or thermostat (bit more expensive but not much). Sometimes it can be both. I keep old working parts to test in my new geysers.
Thanks everyone for the feedback. Just for everyone to relax this is a property I rent and this is what the so called "handyman" supplied by the owner did.
Nevertheless will get someone profesional out to flip it and sort out the bits and pieces.
