hi there

my brother currently has one of these, but its on loan... So he needs to spend some money to get something of the same speed, or slightly better. I guess he is hoping that with two generations later, he might be able to get something for a really good price?

I was looking at the Sapphire HD-7790 1GB edition.

Thoughts and advice please?

A max budget would be nice, then we can look at GPU's more specific to the budget. But, looking at the HD7790, you're looking at the R1500 - R2000 range. If you can go to R2300, you can get a HD7850 (1GB), and push it a bit more to R2400, you can get a HD7870. But if R2000 is the max, get a HD7790 and you'll have some cash to spare for other goodies.

Sapphire HD7790 O.C = R1633

PowerColor AX7790 1GBD5-DH/OC = R1599 (includes free games, however, the cooling looks bad)

PowerColor AX7790 1GBD5-TDH/OC TurboDuo = R1749 (also includes free games, cooling is very good)

R1500 isn't going to be much of an improvement over the current card he has loaned. Then you're looking at HD7770 and GTX650 (maybe a Ti)

Only other option at that price is the GTX650 which the 7790 outperforms.

There's also the second hand option from places like carbonite...
