Giant hole appears at 'world's end'

Apparently this is a permafrost area so what looks like sand may actually be melting ice.
 
It is one of the holes the Silver Surfer made in the Fantastic Four. :D

The journalist already added that in - it's mandatory these days.

Just think how loopy that notion is: The permafrost, which in some places can be around 1km deep, melts because of atmospheric warming. But atmosphere-driven melt doesn't go much deeper than two metres or so. So if greenhouse-gas-driven warning caused the permafrost melt, the released gases (mostly methane) would have to miraculously tunnel deeper into the still frozen permafrost and then auto-combust to cause a crater of that depth. That's even less likely than me suddenly accepting that climate change is caused by human beings.
 
Trapped high pressure gas. Continental shift. Small gap forms and BOOM.

That's what I reckon.
 
If you look at Google Earth, it does seem that the area is riddled with 'holes' so to speak.

I reckon an episode of Top Gear was filmed there. Those three can destroy acres of pristine wilderness in an hour.
