It wasnt done by an explosion, no explosion will make a hole that neat.

I'm not a volcanologist, but my own conjecture is a volcanic conduit or pipe deep underground superheating the groundwater/permafrost ice deep underground, leading to a vertical venting of superheated steam and associated gases. That could account for the neat shaft-like nature of the inner crater as well as the dumping of some soil on the perimeter.
